Swiss-born pianist, Gilles Vonsattel, performs August 31 as part of the Tuesday Night classical music series at Thousand Islands Playhouse.

Vonsattel won the Walter W. Naumburg Foundation’s 2002 International Piano Competition, made his Lincoln Center debut that year at Alice Tully Hall, and has appeared as a soloist with the Utah Symphony, Naples Philharmonic, Grand Rapids Symphony, National Symphony of Ireland, the Boston Pops, and the Orchestre de Chambre de Genève. With repertoire that ranges from Bach’s Art of the Fugue to Xenakis, Mr. Vonsattel is an artist of uncommon breadth equally at home in solo and chamber music.

This is the fourth and final performance in the popular Tuesday Night Series, which brings together noted CBC radio personality Eric Friesen in conversation with great musicians
performing first rate classical music at the Springer Theatre at the Thousand Islands Playhouse.

Building on the success of last years event, this weekend combines a fun day of learning in kayaks and concludes with a race on Sunday. All ages, abilities, individuals + families welcome. There will be learning clinics for adults and kids and race categories for recreational and competitive folks.

Last years attendance was over 200 and with your help we can exceed that this time.

In a meeting that took place last Friday, the Gananoque Police Services Board had the problem of vandalism in the town on the top of their agenda. Not surprisingly, this wasn’t the first time the problem was discussed.

To address the issue, the police service recently put up posters of the “tags” and street signatures used by local vandals. These posters were displayed for the public to see throughout the town, with police asking residents if they recognize any of the tags.

So far, the problem seems to have diminished after the posters were put up and the public was informed, with fewer graffiti reports coming in, this according to Gananoque Chief Kai Liu.

Aside from this measure, teachers in local schools have also been meeting more to share what they know and see if any of the tags are familiar. The primary suspects are speculated to be youths, so seeking them in schools just might work. Those selling spray paint have also been notified to request identification from customers who purchase them.

The show runs from the 2nd until the 10th of July at Photos By Arlene here in the Town of Gananoque. Wing will be welcoming guests on July 3rd herself from 11 in the morning to the 2 in the afternoon.

Wing admits that her second show is just as—if not more—exciting than the first. Last time, Wing focused on the medium and shapes; now her pieces are expected to be more detailed and “colorful,” to say the least.

In addition, she has also opted not to use frames, glass or mattes, this time putting her art on canvas, giving it a more vintage look – a style Wing adores in photographs.

If you have a love for photography and old photographs in particular, then this is one show you shouldn’t dare miss out on.

The Gananoque Legion will be kicking things off on Thursday, with a color party and opening ceremonies at 12:45 in the afternoon. That will be followed by a performance by the Lions Steel Drum Band at 1:15 in the afternoon, with free food and drinks for the public. Up next is Dreams in Motion, who will be providing activities for the kids, with a climbing wall and puppet show for them to have fun with.

And that’s just Thursday we’re talking about. The whole weekend is jam-packed with events for the entire family. Already residents are buzzing with excitement for Ribfest.

A few months back, a local newspaper put up an ad that called on non-profit and animal welfare groups to take charge of the dog licensing campaign and help raise funds. Since no applications were submitted, planning approvals coordinator Brenda Guy took matters into her own hands and had bylaw enforcement officer Rick Kemp take charge of the program.

It may seem like a daunting task for Kemp, what with the high number of unlicensed dogs in the city, but he definitely gets something from his hard work. Kemp will be paid an initial amount of $2,832, and for every dog he tags as part of the campaign, he gets $6.00.

The dog licensing campaign kicks on the 1^st of August this year and is estimated to last until October.
