Oshawa library has plenty of prizes for teen readers this summer

Summer may be all about getting out and enjoying the outdoors to some, but the Oshawa Public Library has different plans – kicking off the season with a summer teen reading program which officially begins on the 5th of July.

To join the program, teens in the City of Oshawa have to drop by at any of the library’s four branches to get a game card, which allows them to score points by reading books, magazines, even check out other forms of media like CDs, DVDs, and video games. The contest runs until the 29th of August, with extra points still up for grabs by joining library activities and writing reviews on books and other media from the Oshawa Public Library.

Teens can then trade their filled up game cards to a bunch of neat prizes, including tickets to Wonderland and an iPod Touch.

But that’s not all. The library is also holding a YouTube video contest that’s open to kids ages 13 to 19. The contest, which runs from the 2nd of July until the 31st of August, invites local youths to create and upload videos of them reading and mentioning “Oshawa Public Libraries.”

According to statistics, a person in Canada is in need of blood every 60 seconds. In an effort to address that dire need, the City of Oshawa and Lakeridge Health are organizing a blood donation battle – the first of its kind in the city. The two factions will be competing against each other to see which side can draw in the most blood donations during the months of May and June.

It may be for a good cause, but both sides are taking this competition seriously.

Oshawa Mayor John Gray is apparently excited to get the ball rolling, and is busy making preparations for the event.

He and Lakeridge Health CEO and president Kevin Empey have a standing bet: if the City wins, Empey will be in charging of mowing grass at the city’s parks and city hall. Mayor Gray is so confident of winning that he even joked that Empey will have a lot of mowing to do, since he’ll make sure to locate the weediest parks for him.

If Lakeridge Health wins on the other hand, Empey will have the mayor and his staff serve meals to Lakeridge Health Oshawa’s patients. The hospital even has a dish cloth and scrubs with the mayor’s name on them, Empey taunted back.

Judy Compton, who works with the Canadian Blood Services, is excited to see both sides ready to pitch in for a worthy cause.

Little by little, communities throughout Canada are getting back on their feet after the recession, but according to Sandra Sweet, there are many families here in Oshawa that are still struggling, with some having a harder time compared to last year.

Sweet, the executive director of Simcoe Hall Settlement House, said that these people still haven’t found jobs, and now that their employment insurance has run out, the situation has become more hopeless as the days go by. There’s just no way they can make it on their own, she added.

The Simcoe Hall Food Bank serves as an important resource for these families not just to get food, but other necessities such as clothing and medicine as well. Last year, the food bank attended to over 11,000 locals. 35% of them were children.

The only way these food banks can meet the needs of the people is through campaigns and projects such as the recently held Kiwanis Spring Food Drive.

The one-day event was a success thanks to the efforts of hundreds of student volunteers who spread out across the city, distributing flyers to over 20,000 homes. The flyers asked homeowners to leave any food donations they could spare on their porch the next weekend, which the students picked up and brought to the food bank.

Find out more on how to help the Simcoe Hall Food Bank by logging on to www.simcoehall.com.

While the Winter Olympics in Vancouver showcase the very best winter athletes in the world today, the event is also giving the Ontario House pavilion an opportunity to draw in crowds.

With the Olympics in full gear, Bright Ideas provides visitors and tourists the “power” to actually control light displays scattered across the country. But they’re not using switches or whatnot to control the lights – instead, they’re using their thoughts.

Equipped with a state-of-the art headset that analyzes brain waves and signals, visitors have the ability to control light displays in three different landmarks in Ontario, namely the CN Tower, Parliament Hill, and Niagara Falls. In addition, users get to turn the lights on and off in real time.

According to Jackie Simkin, an Oshawa native and Bright Ideas’ project manager, everybody who has paid them a visit to try the headsets out have loved the experience. The lineups have been amazing she said.

Indeed, Ontario House has been this jam packed only a handful of times.

Simkin is currently at the Games, and she’s been working on the project since September of 2009. With her experience in advanced technology—she spent 25 years with Nortel and presently works a teacher to gaming students at UOIT—she was more than a good candidate for the position.

If you’re from the Oshawa area and have an eye and gift for drawing and arts, then here’s a contest that might pique your interest.

The City of Oshawa Public Libraries is encouraging teens in the community to let their creativity be known to others and share their talent. Officials from the OPL are looking for young visual artists, inviting them to pass any work of art—as long as it is original of course—as an entry to the 2010 Express Yourself Teen Art Contest, which is held yearly in Oshawa.

The Oshawa Public Libraries is calling out to teenagers from the 7th to 12th Grade to join the contest. The only requirement is to be from Oshawa, and to have an original work of art.

The entries will be separated into 2 categories, one from Grades 7 to 9, and the other from 10 to 12. Professionals and experts will be judging the contest, with the winners getting the opportunity to be recognized at this year’s Literary and Art Festival, which is taking place in May.

Interested teens can drop their entries off at any OPL branch until the 1st of May.

Spread the word and join in on this fun event!
