A golf tournament will be held at the Timber Run Golf Course for the Lanark Village Fire Deptartment as well as www.campquality.org – Camp for KIDS WITH CANCER.

The camp happens at Providence Point in Lanark every year. $75 includes: a cart, 18 holes, BBQ, & Live Auction. The Lanark Village Fire Deptartment will receive a portion of the funds for much needed Pagers. It could be our own home they are protecting. A Metal Meltdown is headed for Perth once more, and metalheads in the town are buzzing with anticipation at the heavy metal concert’s 5^th visit to Perth.

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 244 will be playing host to the metal show, which is taking place on the 14^th of August.

The Metal Meltdown, which is now an annual event, used to have long delays in between concert dates. It wasn’t until the 3^rd concert in 2008 that the concert finally took off and became a success. Because of this, Metal Meltdown then became an annual event ever since.

According to one of the event’s promoters, Aaron Hoffman, bringing heavy metal music to Perth has always been his desire. In his younger years, finding a dozen people who liked heavy metal was considered an accomplishment; now metal is a really big thing in Perth.

This year’s show is expected to get an audience of around 300 people, but that number could change if more people from outside Perth join to watch the concert.

Motorheadache, a Motorhead tribute band, will be headlining. The band will be performing a 90-minute set composed of songs from Motorhead’s 35-year career.

For those who haven’t visited the place before, Camp Merrywood looks like the perfect summer camp for kids.

You’ve got the typical amenities found in a summer vacation camp, such as a spacious mess hall, a large swimming pool, sports facilities for those into basketball and the like, and other indoor and outdoor facilities for recreational purposes. Topping that off are the buildings in the camp that come with very “outdoorsy” names like moose, loon, maple and bear, just to name a few.

Found on a peninsula that conveniently sticks out into the Rideau Lake, giving it an ideal position between Smiths Falls and the Town of Perth, Camp Merrywood stands out from other camps by offering some special features.

On close inspection, visitors will notice a few differences, such as washroom tops specifically designed to be lower to better suit those on wheelchairs. Other features for children with special accessibility needs have been incorporated into the camp, which has earned Merrywood a spot in the hearts of parents who have children with special needs.

Thanks to the united efforts of the 1000 Islands Rotary Club and the Brockville Rotary Club, Camp Merrywood continues to be funded, giving kids with physical disabilities the opportunity to have a great summer vacation in a comfortable and secure setting.

The Perth and District Community Foundation was proud to announce that the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital was the recent recipient of a $20,000 grant, made possible thanks in part to a donation received by the PDCF in 2008, which helped the foundation in putting up the town’s physician recruitment initiative.

The funds will be used in compensating for the money used in renovating the Medical Centre, a 6,000 square foot facility situated near the Great War Memorial site. The extensive construction project will result in a complex that’s designed for family physicians to work in. Once finished, the complex will also serve as a key bargaining chip in hiring new doctors and other medical personnel.

Todd Stepanuik, Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital CEO, comments that the project is part of their commitment to serve the community. The renovation can also be considered as a major incentive for doctors who might want to consider working for the hospital. The recruitment of more doctors means that the community can benefit from the increased quality in healthcare.

The PDCF on the other hand, couldn’t be more excited with the grant and the initiative. Getting new doctors and getting them to practice here is essential to giving the community access to high-quality health services, this according to PDCF President Bob Leitch.

Considered as one of the ultimate challenges to one’s fitness, there’s no denying the fact that the Ironman Triathlon is one tough race to finish. That’s why for Lisa Saunders, a resident of the Town of Perth, a mother of 3 kids and a dedicated athlete, completing the challenge is a major achievement. And yet while the race was indeed grueling, Saunders biggest battles were in fact being waged inside her own body.

Since March last year, Saunders has been suffering from unexplainable symptoms of a disease doctors were unable to diagnose right away. After over a year of experiencing chronic fatigue, muscle pains, headache, and fever, Saunders was finally diagnosed with Lyme disease, a notoriously hard to diagnose infectious disease that is usually transmitted through tick bites.

Lyme disease, which is caused by a strain of bacteria called Borrelia Burgdorferi, is usually diagnosed after finding the presence of a peculiar skin rash in the shape of a red bulls eye. Unfortunately for Saunders, she didn’t have that rash, which forced her to go from doctor to doctor after her medical tests came back with inconclusive results.

Saunders is now undergoing treatment, and is thankful for the help of her doctors, family, church, and community who have all helped in her fight against the disease.

In an effort to raise funds and awareness for the End Polio Now Campaign, the Rotary Clubs of Perth and Kemptville banded together to host the First Benefit Night at the Classic Theatre Festival.

The event saw the presence of 140 Rotarians and friends, as well 50 other individuals who had tickets to watch ‘Blithe Spirit’, the riotous Noel Coward comedy, which was held on July 14.

According to David Batchelor, one of the coordinators for the Rotary Club of Perth, over $2,000 was raised for the campaign at the event. And while everyone certainly enjoyed the dinner and the play, those in attendance had the chance to know more about the End Polio Now Campaign’s message and mission.

Batchelor shares that the event was a smashing success and both Rotary clubs can’t wait for the chance to work on the 2011 Classic Theatre Festival season, getting one step closer to their goal of completely eradicating polio.

It’s worth noting that Rotary and its partners have done tremendous work on reducing the number of Polio cases. Since working on the cause, the number of children suffering from the disease have been reduced by over 90%, saving thousands of children from paralysis and death.

Summer is officially in the air! And for kids here in the Town of Perth, this means loads of fun in the outdoors: camping, biking, swimming, and a whole lot more. And yet while summer may be the best season for kids to have fun, it’s a bit of the opposite for parents. When kids are going biking on the other hand, helmets are of the utmost importance. Make sure to get a helmet that fits, and one that comes with straps that are comfortable and of the right length.
