St Patrick’s Day at the Legion

5

St Patrick’s Day is a public holiday in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador on the nearest Monday to March 17 each year. It remembers St Patrick, a missionary who converted many of Ireland’s inhabitants to Christianity in the 5th century. His feast day also celebrates Irish culture.

St Patrick’s Day marks the feast day and anniversary of the death of a Christian missionary known as Patrick. He was born in the year 387, probably somewhere near the present day border between Scotland and England. At the age of 16, he was captured and taken to Ireland as a slave. During this period, he became very religious and after six years he fled back to his family.

St Patrick’s Day celebrations were brought to Canada by Irish immigrants. The day is a bank holiday in Northern Ireland and a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland. In the rest of the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia and New Zealand, it is celebrated, but is not an official holiday.
People who have an Irish background or enjoy Irish culture may hold Irish themed parties and serve traditional dishes, such as Colcannon or Irish stew. Colcannon is a dish of mashed potatoes mixed with kale or cabbage and Irish stew is traditionally made with lamb and root vegetables.

Symbol

The most widely-seen St Patrick’s Day symbols are the colors green, and sometimes orange, and the shamrock. The shamrock is a symbol of Ireland and a registered trademark of the Republic of Ireland. It is the leaf of the clover plant, which grows on the ground, often among grass and an Irish Catholic symbol of the Holy Trinity. It is sometimes confused with the four-leaf clover, which is a variety of the three-leaf clover and is thought to bring good luck.

Studio Theatre Perth Presents Hilda’s Yard

Hilda's YardHilda’s Yard, opening February 5th at the Studio Theatre, is vintage Foster. Set in 1956, it’s the story of Sam and Hilda Fluck (yes, Fluck) who find themselves blessedly alone after their children, Gary and Janey, have finally flown the family nest. But alas, both kids turn out to be boomerangs, sailing back home faster than you can say lost job and failed marriage. Meanwhile, Sam Fluck may lose his own job because he took time off work to buy a TV set so he and Hilda can watch Gunsmoke, and son Gary is nervously hiding from a bookie to whom he owes money. Yup, this is vintage Foster alright…touching, a little silly, very funny, and loaded with situations any family (OK, most families) can relate to.

Director Roberta Peets helms this wonderful show with a generous dollop of her own heart thrown in. She was attracted to Hilda’s Yard by its heart-warming characters and the nostalgic tug of the 1950s setting.

Hilda’s Yard premieres at the fully accessible Studio Theatre, 63 Gore Street E. in Perth, on Thursday, February 5th, with performances February 5, 6, 7, 13, 14 at 8:00 pm, and February 8 and 15 at 2:00 pm. Regular tickets are $22 at The Book Nook, 60 Gore St. E. (cash only); Tickets Please, 39 Foster St. (613-485-6434;ticketsplease.ca; credit cards accepted, a convenience fee applies) and Shadowfax, 67 Foster St. (613-267-6817; shadowfax.on.ca; credit cards accepted, a convenience fee applies). Tickets are $24 at the door, and students with ID pay just $10 at the door on show nights.

So don’t miss your chance to peek over Hilda’s fence, starting February 5th. If you like crowd pleasing shows with plenty of laughs and a happy ending, Hilda’s Yard is the night out you’ve been longing for

An Ideal Husband by Oscar WildeSummer time and the laughin’ is easy!
Oscar Wilde’s Masterpiece
An Ideal Husband
August 14, 15, 16, 21, 22, & 23 at 8:00 pm
August 17 & 24 at 2:00 pm

Along with “The Importance of Being Ernest”, this is Oscar Wilde’s most produced comedic social satires. Written with style and wit, this piece examines the foibles of the rich and powerful as they play at politics, love and even blackmail. As the clever repartee and lies begin to fly, it’s revealed that the “perfect” man is flawed, the man with all the flaws must do something right, and the question remains: what makes an ideal husband? Oscar Wilde is an ideal and delightful diversion for dog days of August.

Tickets: $22 at The Book Nook (cash), 60 Gore Street E. and Tickets Please, 39 Foster Street, (613) 485-6434, www.ticketsplease.ca; credit cards accepted; a convenience fee applies. $24 at the door; $10 at the door for students with ID
