Kingston Native Helps Women’s Hockey Team Capture Gold at Olympics

With the Canadian women’s hockey team beating the United States 2-0 in the championship game, Kingston residents couldn’t be prouder with the performance of the city’s own Jayna Hefford, who adds yet another Olympic medal to her growing collection.

A force to be reckoned with even at 32, (relatively ‘senior’ according to the sports standards) the Kingston native helped the Canadian women’s hockey team snatch a gold medal in front of a roaring crowd in Vancouver, British Columbia.

While she didn’t score any goals and was slapped with three minor penalties during the game, Hefford still did well and was presented with numerous chances to score points. She finished the tournament in second place for overall scoring, racking in a total of 5 goals and seven assists for the women’s team.

With her latest achievement, Hefford joins the ranks of Canada’s elite athletes who have played in all four Olympics women’s hockey teams.

Cheering Hefford on during the game was her mother, Sandra, who came all the way to Vancouver just to watch her daughter play.

Hefford’s next step? She’s considering making another bid for the gold medal in the 2014 Winter Olympics, which will be held in Russia. Though right now, she just wants to relax and enjoy her team’s victory.
