Kingston Schools Going Green

2 elementary schools in the Kingston area recently received a grant of $1,000 each to work on their environmental programs.

Metro Ontario Inc. gave the grants to Ecole Catholique Cathedrale and St. Patrick’s Catholic School in Kingston. The move was made through the company’s Green Apple School program.

St. Patrick’s Catholic School used the money to create a large green space right in front of the school premises. According to St. Patrick’s Vice-principal Mark Sonneman, the goal of creating the green space is to have a mini eco-system in Kingston.

The school’s students have been very hands-on. In fact, they even came up with the green space’s design and took the liberty of figuring out which plants were suitable for the project. And while they’re relatively young, that doesn’t mean they don’t know what they’re doing. The students are currently working on incorporating a butterfly garden and a few birdhouses into the space.

Ecole Catholique Cathedrale on the other hand, used the money for the enhancement of the school’s existing recycling program. Officials recently purchased more recycling bins to add to the ones they’re using in the school premises. What’s left of the money will be used to buy composters.
