\u201cCoffeehouse at the Wheeler\u201d will become a French boite, or caf\u00e9 on Friday, June 17, from 6 to 8 pm, when it returns with singer\/guitarist Suzanne Sheridan and accordionist Don Gerundo performing an evening of caf\u00e9 songs by Edith Piaf and Jacques Brel.<\/p>\n
A professional photographer as well as singer and songwriter, Sheridan launched the Friday evening coffeehouses at the WHS five years ago.<\/p>\n
The venue takes its name from the Society\u2019s headquarters, the 18th century Wheeler House on Avery Place. For the upcoming Coffeehouse, Sheridan will sing such Piaf standards as \u201cLa Vie en Rose,\u201d \u201cMilord,\u201d \u201cNon, Je Ne Regrette Rien\u201d and \u201cMon Dieu\u201d and Brel\u2019s \u201cNe Me Quitte Pas\u201d and \u201cSi On N\u2019a Que l\u2019Amour,\u201d (If we Only Have Love\u201d) among others.<\/p>\n
\u201cParisians love their cafes, known as bo\u00eetes,\u201d Sheridan says, \u201cand most French singers and songwriters begin their musical journeys singing in the bo\u00eetes of Paris.\u201d Sheridan\u2019s exposure to the Paris caf\u00e9 scene came when she was in college and took a year abroad in Paris studying philosophy at the Sorbonne. More recently she has been attending French classes at the Westport library, where she used lyrics from Brel and Piaf songs to hone her French pronunciation.<\/p>\n
