Scottish Country Dancing at McMartin House

16

Scottish Country Dancers meet every Friday morning (from 9:15 to 11:30 A.M.) to learn new dances and have fun.  We begin our year in September and finish in April, with a luncheon at the end. We welcome newcomers, young in spirit, male and female, who would like to join our happy group.

Scottish Country Dancing is exercise for both the body and the brain, but without the usual routines associated with exercise. It is usually done with partners in sets of four or more dancers of all ages. It differs from the Scottish Highland dancing which is usually performed solo by younger dancers.

Christmas Day!

9

Many Christians in Canada mark the birth of Jesus Christ on December 25, which is known as Christmas Day. It is a day of celebration when many Canadians exchange gifts and enjoy festive meals.

Many Canadians have a day off work on December 25 and many spend the day with close relatives or friends. It is customary to exchange gifts, enjoy a special festive meal and, perhaps, attend a special church service.

The traditions centered on Christmas gifts in Canada vary a lot between families. In some families, a mythical figure called Santa Claus brings gifts. He travels on a sleigh pulled by reindeer, enters homes via the chimney and leaves presents and candy in Christmas stockings or in a pile under the Christmas tree.

Symbols of Christmas Day

There are many symbols of Christmas. These include images of baby Jesus and the Holy family in the stable, stars and Christmas trees. Another important symbol of Christmas is Santa Claus. This is a mythical figure with origins in European, particularly British, Dutch and German, cultures. He is a jolly man who wears a red suit, has a long white beard, lives at the North Pole and travels in a sleigh pulled by reindeer.

The Bells of St. Paul’s in Concert 2016

12

Sunday, November 20th, 2016, at 3 pm, the Bells of St. Paul’s, ringing joyfully for 24 years, will be presenting a concert at St. Paul’s United Church”. This concert will feature the handbell choir and several guest artists from this area, under the Direction of Ann McMahon. Free will offering will be accepted at the doors.

Each year of the handbell choir’s existence, handbell music and handbell musicians have been changing and developing. Sharing these developments in a concert is indeed a joy.

For one thing, handbell music is no longer limited to church music. Several composers now write music specifically for this beautiful instrument. The concert program will include sizzling, jazzy, and swingy selections, sensitive and expressive melodies, and a few surprises! The techniques employed in bringing the music to life have greatly expanded beyondjust ringing.  And, in addition to being more interesting for audiences, the new music and new techniques have attracted a high caliber of musicians.

Steve Poltz with Special Guest Graven

4

Carefree, joyful, fearless and heartbreakingly sincere, Steve Poltz is a spontaneous storyteller and masterful musician. He was the sleeper hit of the Stewart Park Festival, 2016. If you missed him, you missed the performances of the summer.

He is co-writer of Jewel’s “You Were Meant for Me” (and her bandmate, and former boyfriend) San Diego’s Artist of the Decade, and dual-citizen (but if a hostage situation breaks out he’s conveniently Canadian).

Taking audiences on a journey of unadulterated emotion, he leaves people blissfully confused, yearning for more and friends forever. www.poltz.com

 The Last Deadman

15
BarnDoor Theatre Presents “The Last Deadman”: David Jacklin’s legendary drama with music about Canada’s last fatal duel.

First performed in 1983 (the 150th anniversary of the duel), this intense drama looks at the effect of the duel on its victor — a man who very nearly became Canada’s first prime minister!

More than simply a story of a lady’s slighted honour, the duel had far-reaching consequences for the shaping of our nation.

Told with drama, music, humour and excitement, it is a challenging and surprising multi-media theatrical event.
