Helen Bennett And Ken Austin – A Tribute To Two Central Florida Legends

Helen Bennett And Ken Austin – A Tribute To Two Central Florida Legends

The late Helen Bennett was well known in the ceramics community for decades as an artist, mentor, and owner of the Bennett Pottery Company, which she opened with her husband Rae after moving to Central Florida in 1969. Part of her role was to create “special formulas” of clay for many local artists. Bennett studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and Penland School of Craft in the 1960’s and taught at Loch Haven Art Center (now Orlando Museum of Art) and Valencia Community College. She exhibited at all the major outdoor art festivals for over 15 years, including Winter Park, Coconut Grove, and Disney Festival of the Masters and received many awards for her unique work.

Ken Austin is recognized as the founder of the Central Florida Watercolor Society and as the former president of the Watercolor Art Society in Houston, TX. Ken, a retired architect and city planner, has created artwork that reveals his interest in both modern and traditional styles. His paintings have been featured in numerous Watercolor Society exhibitions, galleries, and museums throughout the United States. He has served as a popular faculty member at Crealdé School of Art for many years prior to his recent retirement from teaching. Curated by Barbara Tiffany and Crealdé Senior Faculty in Ceramics Doug Bringle.

Merry Christmas! :-)

Many Canadians have a day off work on December 25 and many spend the day with close relatives or friends. It is customary to exchange gifts, enjoy a special festive meal and, perhaps, attend a special church service.

In some Canadian families and in the United States, a mythical figure called Santa Claus brings gifts. He travels on a sleigh pulled by reindeer, enters homes via the chimney and leaves presents and candy in Christmas stockings or in a pile under the Christmas tree. In other families, individual members exchange carefully selected gifts. Popular gifts are toys, games and candy for children and clothes, music, alcohol and practical or luxury items for adults. Canadians may open their presents on Christmas Eve after a special church service or during the morning or after lunch on Christmas Day.

The original meaning of Christmas is a special church service, or mass, to celebrate the birth of Christ. The story of the Nativity, or the events surrounding the birth of Jesus, are particularly important in religious celebrations of Christmas. However, many traditions that are around today have their roots in pre-Christian winter festivals. These include the importance of candles and decorations made from evergreen bushes and tree, symbolizing everlasting light and life.
