Christmas Eve in Westport

8

Christmas Eve is the evening or entire day preceding Christmas Day, the festival commemorating the birth of Jesus of Nazareth.[4] Christmas Day is observed around the world, and It is widely observed as a full or partial holiday in anticipation of Christmas Day. Together, both days are considered one of the most culturally significant celebrations in Christendom and Western society.

Many people around the world celebrate Christmas Eve in different ways. It is observed in many countries such as Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Christmas Eve has many of its own customs and traditions

The most widely practised one that still exists today is going to a Midnight Mass Church Service. Many other varying cultural traditions and experiences are also associated with Christmas Eve around the world, including the gathering of family and friends, the singing of Christmas carols, the illumination and enjoyment of Christmas lights, trees, and other decorations, the wrapping, exchange and opening of gifts, and general preparation for Christmas Day.

Legendary Christmas gift-bearing figures including Santa Claus, Father Christmas, Christkind, and Saint Nicholas are also often said to depart for their annual journey to deliver presents to children around the world on Christmas Eve, although until the Protestant introduction of Christkind in 16th-century Europe,[10] such figures were said to instead deliver presents on the eve of Saint Nicholas’ feast day (December 6).

Christmas Eve around the world!

In many European countries including Germany, Serbia and Slovakia, Christmas Eve is the day when the Christmas Tree is brought into the house and decorated.

Saturday, December 24, 2016 | all day

What’s cooking in Westport

6

Cook together in the community kitchen on the first Tuesday of every month! Learn new skills, take home food. Childcare is available.

Join us for What’s Cooking in Westport. If you’re interested in donating to our Westport Food Sharing Shelf, check out the list of ideas coming from this month’s recipes! Focus on healthy eating and food skills development. Group members participate in both planning, hands on cooking and nutrition education discussions each month. Participants take food items home. Includes a volunteer development component.

Last month, in addition to making chili and cornbread from scratch, we’ve learn how to turn the chili into a salad, with lettuce, tomato, onion, guacamole, and chipotle ranch dressing. For dessert, we’ve worked on how to do an apple taste test, with a banana nut dip!
