For the past 6 straight years, the City of Winter Park, Florida, has sponsored the Family Fall Festival. For 2010, they’re turning the reins over to YMCA, who will now be tasked to continue this fun tradition and host the annual event for the whole community.

And with YMCA now taking care of things, it’s clear that the event has the organization’s touch. This year’s Family Fall Festival will be filled with activities the whole family can participate in, such as healthy living and child development lectures, hay rides, inflatable bounce houses, arts & crafts projects for kids, balloon animals, a pumpkin patch and more.

As always, the goal of the event is to strengthen the bonds between Winter Park’s families. Not only do they get an opportunity to have a fun-filled day, they also get to learn valuable lessons while they’re at it.

Winter Park Dedicates Azalea Lane Tennis Pavilion in Memory of Nancy Corse Reed

In a move to preserve the memory of the late tennis player Nancy Corse Reed, the City of Winter Park’s Parks & Recreation Department will be dedicating the Azalea Lane Tennis Pavilion in her name on the 17th of May. The pavilion is located at the Azalea LaneTennis Center, along Azalea Lane in Winter Park. The ceremony begins at exactly 12 noon, followed by a luncheon where donations worth $12.50 will be collected from each of the guests.

The City however, doesn’t want this day to be sad. In fact, they’re hosting a round-robin tennis tournament in honor of Reed on Monday, which kicks off on the same day at 9 to 11:30 in the morning. Call time for the players is set 30 minutes before the tournament. Since slots for the games are limited, interested players are asked to RSVP before the 7th of May. You can make a reservation by calling 570-249-0088 or sending  pat.handwerk@gmail.com an e-mail.

Born in Minnesota, Nancy Corse Reed grew up in Maryland, where she found a love for tennis at a tender age. She became a star at Rollins College, where she took the spotlight as a member of one of the best teams in the United States.

In the years that would follow, Reed would become an international tennis sensation, taking the number one seed in the 35 to 65 year age division.

Winter Park Plays Host to Green Gardening Once More

Got a green thumb? Then you’re sure to love one upcoming event here in the City of Winter Park.

The Winter Park Neighborhood  Council is set to once again host the lecture series ‘Green Gardening,’ in picturesque Winter Park. This year’s series features classes and lectures with the presence of renowned landscape artists and architects as well as talks from celebrated gardening specialists and masters of the hobby. Green Gardening takes place throughout the months of May, July, and October.

The city’s Environmental Review Board is working together with the Neighborhood Council to encourage the community to participate in the series of lectures so they can know more about the ins and outs of gardening and landscaping. This is done in an effort to have the most number of certified Florida-Friendly Yards in the state.

The Florida Yards & Neighborhoods program is a campaign that showcases homes that boast of eco-friendly gardening and landscaping techniques. These yards are thus called Florida-Friendly Yards, and are recognized for their minimized use of potable water for irrigation, which reduces the risk of harming the environment through the use of excess pesticides and fertilizers.

A yard doesn’t need to follow a template to be recognized. It’s how a homeowner keeps his garden looking good and environmentally friendly that counts the most.

Time for Spring Cleanup in Winter Park

It’s time once again for another round of spring cleaning, and the City of Winter Park, Fl,  is encouraging residents to come and join the city’s yearly Spring Cleanup, which takes place during the last week of May, until the beginning of June. Four city quadrants are designated clean up areas, but residents are more than free to clean where they please.

This year’s Spring Cleanup also has a pickup day, allowing residents to discard hard-to-dispose items such as broken appliances, computers and other electronics, broken furniture, and other heavy & bulky objects. All residents have to do to avail of this convenience is to place these items outside the curb at 5 in the evening, the night before the scheduled pickup day in their quadrant.

Remember that hazardous waste will still be collected the regular way, and will not be included in the Spring Cleanup. These items include household chemicals, tires, batteries, paints, propane tanks, and pesticides.

The same goes for yard waste, which will still be collected during regular trash pickup days.

So what’re you waiting for?Free up some space in your home and figure out which items can be given to charity or disposed.
