Winter Park Outlook

TODO

Winter Park’s Robust Recovery is the focus of our 2020 Outlook, the Chamber’s annual regional-issues summit. In addition to featuring an update on Chamber activities and a brief presentation of the Winter Park COVID-19 Economic Analysis – a study underwritten by the Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation and conducted by the Balmoral Group – the event will focus on the Winter Park Economic Recovery Task Force. After the study put into perspective the effects of the pandemic on Winter Park’s economy and businesses, the Task Force went to work on developing mitigation strategies for a robust recovery.

An exhibition dedicated to BLACK LIVES MATTER

Cynthia B. Slaughter invites viewers into her home in Orlando’s Orlovista neighborhood in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma in 2017. Slaughter tells the visual story of her life after 33 years of memories were wiped away and her home was deemed unlivable by FEMA. Additionally, Slaughter shares a deeply intimate documentary on her 94-year-old mother, Edna Pearl Butler, a retired farmworker in the celery fields of Sanford, Florida, where she has been a resident since 1950. Her images chronicle her current life of devoted service to her faith, her family, and her local community. Cynthia B. Slaughter is a Studio Artist in documentary photography at Crealdé School of Art where she has studied since 2008 and participated in Crealdé documentaries including St. Augustine at 450 and The Lake: A Documentary Exploring the Land and People of Lake Apopka.

During the opening reception, each gallery will be carefully monitored by Crealdé staff and will have a strict capacity of 10 people for 10 minutes. We expect visitors to be responsible by wearing masks and practicing social distancing. Refreshments will be served outdoors.

Select Portraits from the Morse Collection

portrait painting of a man

The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum is open by appointment only – schedule yours here

Portraiture in America in the latter half of the 19th century and early part of the 20th century took on a different purpose. Rather than romantic portrayals of royals and magnates, paintings of people who commissioned portraits showed qualities beyond the physical attributes of their subjects. John Singer Sargent (1856–1925), Charles Hawthorne (1872–1930), and Cecilia Beaux (1855–1942) were portraitists that let the paint express the individual’s character and who did not simply reproduce the subject’s likeness on canvas. Portraits from the Morse Museum’s American painting collection are part of its repository of American art from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
