Don’t Pitch It! Fix It! Workshop

Don’t Pitch It – Fix It!, initiated by the City of Winter Park and Winter Park Public Library, is a community repair workshop in partnership with Orange County and City of Orlando. Individuals can bring items in need of fixing as well as share their own repair expertise with participants.

This unique workshop is designed to support the city’s Sustainability Action Plan by reducing the daily consumption of goods in homes, encouraging recycling, helping to save money through trade, as well as learning about valuable skills and resources from volunteers within the community. Introduction to composting

By composting, you can help reduce your overall landfill contribution and make organic matter able to improve the chemical, physical and biological characteristics of your soils.

Attend a City of Winter Park “Introduction to Composting” class and learn how to turn yard and kitchen waste into organic matter to use as a soil amendment, mulch, and potting soil. Composting of yard trash is an environmentally sound way to reduce solid waste by recycling a useful resource. If you have a large amount of food waste that ends up in the trash can or feel like you should contribute less to the overall flood of waste headed to our landfills, this class is for you. Designed for residents interested in learning about backyard composting, attendees will learn the basics of home composting, how to build your own compost system, and the benefits of composting.

The workshop includes a presentation and information packet. We are offering FREE backyard composters to Winter Park residents. To become eligible, you must meet the following requirements:

  1. Must resident within the City of Winter Park Boundary. Check your your eligibility by viewing a map of the City of Winter Park Boundary.
  2. Residents must attend one of our upcoming Introduction to composting classes being led by Ed Thrall of UF/IFAS Extension Orange County.

Limit one composter per household. This program is sponsored by City of Winter Park Sustainability Program and UF/IFAS Extension Orange County. Limited Seating.

The final Introduction to Composting workshop will be held November 12.

Good Morning Winter Park

Keynote Speaker: Bronce Stephenson

Good Morning Winter Park is Winter Park’s live, interactive morning magazine featuring local topics ranging from politics to exploring entries in the marketplace in and around Winter Park.

This Good Morning Winter Park will feature Bronce Stephenson, Director of Planning and Community Development of the City of Winter Park.

Winter Park has long wrestled with what should be done with Orange Avenue, which is a rare area of town that has been economically stagnant for years. Bronce Stephenson was brought to Winter Park with the task of creating a plan for Orange Avenue. The Winter Park Planning staff is embracing this place-making effort to create a vibrant mixed-use district that helps the area businesses and provides better connectivity to area residents and Mead Gardens.  An effort to create Winter Park’s next great place is underway, capitalizing on the opportunity to enhance Orange Avenue using an overlay district. Mr. Stephenson will explain how this community-driven planning effort is creating a real buzz and how the Winter Park community gets to be involved in creating the Vision for Orange Avenue.
