The Art of Missionary Mary Proctor

Hannibal Square Heritage Center GalleryCome out during January 20 to April 21 at the Hannibal Square Heritage Center Gallery for the The Art of Missionary Mary Proctor.

Tallahassee-based Mary Proctor is a self-taught African-American artist and has exhibited her highly distinctive work nationally. Her artwork incorporates found objects into paintings and three dimensional works, largely inspired by Bible scripture and other life lessons. Curated by executive director Peter Schreyer, the exhibition includes work from Mary’s personal collection as well as from that of the Mennello Museum of American Art.

Gallery talk at 7 p.m. at adjacent Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church; opening reception 8 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday, January 20.

35th Annual Winter Park Road Race

Annual Champs Sports Bowl Parade of Bands

Annual Champs Sports Bowl Parade of BandsStarting at 11am on December 29, 2011, the City of Winter Park will proudly host the 5th annual Champs Sports Bowl ® Parade of Bands featuring school bands from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and Big East. As a prelude to the Champs Sports Bowl® game, at the Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium, school bands and mascots will march through downtown Winter Park and perform a “Bandastic Game Day Preview” in Central Park. The parade will start at 11 a.m. at the intersection of Park and Lyman avenues. School bands will march north along Park Avenue through downtown Winter Park. After turning west on Garfield Avenue, they will proceed to Central Park where they will perform for all fans to enjoy. Ye Olde Hometown Christmas Parade

Winter Park “Ye Olde Hometown” Christmas ParadeEach year the Winter Park Chamber of Commerce hosts the Winter Park “Ye Olde Hometown” Christmas Parade in downtown Winter Park. The parade is the longest-running holiday parade in Central Florida. More than 100 units march down Park Avenue in downtown Winter Park, including bands, floats, dignitaries and, of course, Santa Claus.

The 59th Annual Winter Park “Ye Olde Hometown” Christmas Parade will be held Saturday, December 3, 2011 beginning at 9am on Park Avenue in Downtown Winter Park.

Holiday Tree Lighting CeremonyThe Winter Park Chamber of Commerce invites you to kick off the holidays at the annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony in Central Park in downtown Winter Park. Bring the entire family to this free event for an evening of holiday cheer as Park Avenue is transformed into a Winter Wonderland.

Now for its second year, Small Business Saturday is dedicated to supporting local small businesses during the busiest holiday shopping weekend of the year. On the Saturday after Thanksgiving, supporters pledge to shop at local, independently-owned merchants. (November 26, 2011)

12th Annual Doggie Door Pet Costume Contest

The 12th Annual Doggie Door Pet Costume Contest will be taking place Sunday October 30th, 2011 from 10:00 AM until 03:00 PM at the Bullfish on Park Avenue.

This fun-filled pet costume contest and Pet Trick or Treat event is hosted and presented each year by The Doggie Door in Winter Park and BullFish An annual event, this pet costume contest attracts thousands, and includes a Pet Trick or Treat along Park Avenue at over 30 participating stores.

There will also be caricature artists and photographer available for a seasonal photo of your pet, dog trainers to help you with doggie training challenges and many great pet-related vendors who offer holistic massage, all natural foods, pet sitting, and day care.

Adoption organizations will also be on hand for those looking to adopt a homeless pet, or to support through volunteer opportunities and donations. Fido is welcome at this event, but please leave your retractable leashes at home. This event will benefit the Sebastian Haul Fund – a fund created to help local greyhound organizations transport retired racing greyhounds to loving homes in other states.
