Happy Valentine’s Day!

Valentine’s Day is an opportunity for people in Canada to tell somebody that they love them in a romantic way. It falls on February 14, the name day of two saints, St Valentine of Rome and St Valentine of Terni.

Many people give gifts to loved ones on Valentine’s Day. Common gifts are letters, cards, presents and gifts to the person with whom they have or want to have a romantic relationship. Valentine’s Day cards are often red or pink and decorated with images of hearts, red roses, teddy bears, presents or happy couples kissing or embracing.

The most common symbols of Valentine’s Day are heart shapes, which are used to decorate many things, including cards, trees, wrapping paper, cookies and gift boxes. Other symbols associated with February 14 are pairs of birds, cute teddy bears, Cupid and his arrows and couples kissing or embracing. The colors red and pink are often associated with Valentine’s Day.

Double-Double Duo in recital

On Saturday, February 3rd, 2018 at 2:00pm, the “Music at the Manor” series returns to The Perth Manor with a truly fabulous performance by “DOUBLE-DOUBLE DUO” featuring Kornel Wornak, clarinet and piano, and one of Canada’s most outstanding accordion players, Michael Bridge.

Gordon Craig of The Perth Manor says, “This is the most outstanding concert we have presented since we began our series here at The Manor.” The Perth Manor has also created a special ticket price for students, less than half price!

DOUBLE-DOUBLE DUO is about much more than coffee; each duo member is a “double threat” on two instruments: Kornel Wolak (clarinet/piano), and Michael Bridge (accordion/piano). Classically trained, international soloists, they use comedy, virtuosity and musical sensitivity to bring their broad repertoire to life. “Double-Double Duo is the best of new, young classical musicians…. bringing their own style of intellect, expertise and talent to a new 21st century audience.” (Barrie Examiner);

Actively touring in Poland, France, Ecuador and across Canada, Double-Double Duo performs their all-original arrangements of classical showpieces, sensitive jazz ballads and fiery folk music from around the globe.

Originally from Alberta, Michael Bridge (accordions and piano) was named one of CBC’s 30 Hot Classical Musicians Under 30 in 2016, and is a winner of the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Emerging Artist Medal and the Canadian Digital Accordion Championships. Active in new music, he has over 30 world premières to his credit. He is a graduate student in accordion performance at the University of Toronto, studying with Joseph Macerollo.

Wolak and Bridge began their collaboration in 2011. They have since performed across Canada for arts organizations as diverse as the music they play — from the Ontario Philharmonic to the Calgary Stampede. On the occasion of an international music festival in Loja, Ecuador, they met their future collaborator, Prof. Guillaume Tardif (violin) from the University of Alberta, with whom they toured Europe in summer 2016 as a trio.

Tickets are available by calling Perth Manor at 613-264-0050 Ext. 1. Tickets are $35 plus HST and include a glass of wine and hors d’oeuvres at the post-concert reception. Student tickets (age 18 and under) are available for $15 plus HST and include a non-alcoholic beverage with hors d’oeuvres.
