In the Mood for Peace Day June 27

On Wednesday, June 27th, 2012, everyone in Perth can celebrate IN THE MOOD FOR PEACE DAY, a day to honour and pay tribute to the peace efforts of our Canadian Forces, veterans and hundreds of volunteers involved in the IZZY DOLL PROGRAM.

Over a million knitted and crocheted Izzy Dolls have been made by Canadian women and students across Canada, including thousands made by volunteers right here in Perth. All these truly Canadian Izzy Dolls, made with much love, are collected and distributed by two main sources: the International Community for the Relief of Starvation and Suffering (ICROSS) Canada, and the Order of the Eastern Star. Izzy Dolls are given to children around the world who are suffering due to war, famine, natural disasters, etc. These are innocent victims and they find great comfort in hugging an Izzy Doll given to them either by a Canadian soldier, doctor or relief worker.

There are several ways you can participate:

From 1pm to 3:30pm at the Royal Canadian Legion (26 Beckwith St. East, Perth) there is a hands-on workshop: How to Make an Izzy Doll – all ages are invited to participate.
At 1:30pm: there is a one-hour concert (at the Perth Legion) with Izzy’s Troop from Calgary, Alberta. Tom Poole, Roberta Travis, Diana Slater and Phyllis Wheaton will perform music, picture shows and a ten minute film called “Epic Dragon Fable.”
At 3:30pm at the Bandshell behind Town Hall: Mayor John Fenik will make a public proclamation to designate Wednesday, June 27th, 2012 as “IN THE MOOD FOR PEACE DAY IN PERTH.”
At 6pm: at the Perth Legon, the doors open to view displays.
From 7-9pm at the Perth Legion: Guest Speaker MGen Lewis MacKenzie (Rtd), Patron of ICROSS Canada; St. Paul’s United Church Youth Choir; Concert by Izzy’s Troop.

While you’re at the Legion, visit the Hall of Remembrance Military Museum on the upper level and view displays by ICROSS Canada, Order of the Eastern Star, Canadian Landmine Foundation and the Izzy Dolls in the Legion Hall from 1-3pm and 6-7pm.

ADMISSION IS FREE! This event is sponsored by Leeds Chapter #255 Order of the Eastern Star in partnership with the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 244, Perth, Ontario.
