Happy Canada Day!

In many towns and cities, municipal governments organize a range of events, often outdoors. These include pancake breakfasts, parades, concerts, carnivals, festivals, firework displays and citizenship ceremonies for new Canadian citizens. The celebrations often have a patriotic mood. Canada’s national flag is widely displayed and a lot of people paint their faces red and white, which are Canada’s national colors.

On July 1, 1867, the British North Americas Act created the Dominion of Canada as a federation of four provinces. This event is known as the confederation of Canada. The four original provinces were created from the former British colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and the Province of Canada, which was divided into the provinces of Quebec and Ontario. Canada’s boundaries have been extended since 1867. The country now consists of 10 provinces and three territories.

Canada’s national flag is seen on Canada Day. This consists of two vertical red rectangles separated by a white square. The white square contains a red image of a maple leaf. Canada’s national colors are red and white and are used in many ways on Canada Day. Some people wear red and white clothing and others paint their faces in these colors.

Canada Day also coincides with Quebec’s Moving Day, when many fixed-lease apartment rental terms expire. The bill changing the province’s moving day from May 1 to July 1 was introduced by a federalist member of the Quebec National Assembly, Jérôme Choquette, in 1973,[27] in order not to affect children still in school in the month of May.[28]

Graven and Ben Mullin at the Cove Inn!

(Jaybird)… promises to continue Graven’s lyrical flair with songs like “Big Lake, Sky Summer”, “In the Woods of Me” and “Lone”. Here, McKechnie walks the ridges of an alt-country landscape planting seeds of folk-rock along the way. What sprouts up are songs he calls his “thickest”, “crunchiest” and “folk-rocky-est” to date.”
Andre Gagne (Ottawa Life Magazine)

The alt-folk, spacey, backwoods rock rail rider Graven and his guitar guru/voice Venus Ben Mullin are set to stage an interstellar night of sonic delight in the beautiful, field-jewel town of Westport on Friday May 26.

Graven is the alt-country folk-rock mindscape of Matt McKechnie. His new album features percussion from JUNO winner Joel Plaskett’s drummer Dave Marsh.

Safe Kids Week in Westport

May 30 to June 5 – 2017 is the 21st Anniversary for Parachute’s Safe Kids Week Many Canadians are surprised to learn that preventable injuries kill more children every year than any other disease.

Parachute Safe Kids Week is a national awareness campaign developed to bring attention to predictable and preventable injuries in children. Taking place June 5 – 11, 2017 this year is focused on promoting safe and active transportation: Walk, Bike, Wheel, which includes walking, cycling, skateboarding, scootering and other wheeled activities.

This year’s theme is everyday superhero, which encourages children to become leaders in road safety by learning how to stay active and keep themselves and their loved ones safe on their travels to and from school, to the bus stop, and around their neighbourhood. Parents can guide their child’s activities by modelling safe behaviour and practices on the road, and also being aware of their child’s skill level.

There are a few easy steps we can all take to keep children, and ourselves safe. Start by taking part. Communities across Canada are participating in Parachute Safe Kids Week.

The good news is that prevention efforts are working – since 1996, Canada has enjoyed a decreasing trend in death and hospitalizations from preventable injuries overall. But there is a still lot of work to do to keep children, and ourselves safe.Plan to take part in Parachute’s Safe Kids Week, happening May 30 – June 5, 2016 with a focus on the top injury issues that affect children on the road, at home and at play.

Happy Mother’s Day 2017!

Mother’s Day is a celebration honoring the mother of the family, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most commonly in the months of March or May.

Background
Early Mother’s Day celebrations can be dated back to the spring celebrations to honor Rhea, the Mother of the Gods, in ancient Greek civilization, according to some sources. Later, Mothering Sunday in the United Kingdom was traditionally a day for people to visit the church where they were baptized, although it now also celebrates motherhood in modern times.

Symbol
Early celebrations of Mother’s Day originated from Canada’s neighboring country, the United States. Carnations are a popular Mother’s Day symbol in both Canada and the United States. Some people may choose to wear a carnation as a brooch on Mother’s Day. However, other flowers are also given to mothers or mother figures to symbolize one’s love and appreciation for them.

What do people do on Mother’s day?
Many people remember their mothers and mother figures on Mother’s Day.
Some people give cards, flowers, or chocolates, and/or make handmade items or special meals on Mother’s Day. Others take their mothers or mother figures to the movies, a restaurant, café, or a day in a park. Some mothers and mother figures also receive special gifts such as jewelry, clothing, accessories, and gift vouchers for services or products.

Mother’s Day falls on different days depending on the countries where it is celebrated. It is held on the second Sunday of May in many countries, such as Australia, Canada and the United States. It is held exactly three weeks before Easter Sunday in the United Kingdom. Sundays are usually non-school and non-working days in these countries.
