Diabetes Symposium to be Held in Gananoque

Gananoque Secondary School will be playing host to the 2nd Diabetes Symposium, set to take place on the 27th of September. The event will feature guest speakers who will discuss issues, problems, and solutions related to the disease that currently affects about 1 in 10 people here in Canada.

According to April McCann, representative for the Canadian Diabetes Association, last year’s symposium drew in 70 interested individuals, and the positive response they received during last year’s event prompted them to return and raise awareness once more.

McCann also works as the Public Programs and Services Coordinator for the Association here in South East Ontario.

The symposium kicks off at 6:30 in the evening and will tackle how to manage diabetes through fitness, healthy habits, and foot wellness.

One of the seminar’s speakers, Dr. Phyllis Hierlihy, will deliver a presentation labeled , “De-feeting Diabetes: One Step at a Time.” In it, she will go over the importance of physical activity in preventing and controlling the effects of Type 2 Diabetes.

It’s worth noting that in the Town of Gananoque, 350 people have diabetes, this according to statistics from the Canadian Diabetes Association. The number could be even higher as doctors suspect there are plenty more people in town that have yet to be diagnosed with the disease.
