HOGTOWN ALLSTARS blew the doors off The Cove – again!

THE HOGTOWN ALLSTARS returned to play BLUES ON THE RIDEAU at THE COVE INN in Westport ON last Friday and blew the doors off the place – again! This was their 4th visit since the Series began and each time they have sold the place out. Friday was no exception. The dance floor was packed all night – in fact dancers spilled out into other parts of the room just to have space. It’s no wonder “The Hoggies” have become such a crowd favourite at BOTR. With 5 members from the legendary DOWNCHILD Blues Band – Chuck Jackson on vocals and harp, Michael Fonfara on keyboards, Pat Carey on sax, Gary Kendall on bass and Mike Fitzpatrick on drums PLUS Teddy Leonard on guitar (formerly Fathead, The Maple Blues Band) these guys represent almost 300 years of Blues playing experience – and it shows. Big band, big time Blues as good as it gets. They will definitely be invited back!

The sumptuouos Cove buffet featured BBQ beef brisket, pan seared Pickerel, Louisiana Gumbo (chicken, shrimp, sausage) plus rice, roast potatoes, veggies, and salads. Lemon squares w. blueberry sauce for dessert.

$620 was raised for The Friends Of Foley Mountain http://rvca.ca/careas/friends_of_foley/index.html

Some of the comments from the COMMENT CARDS that night:

“Oh wow! Best band ever. Could hardly find a spot on the dance floor! Our first time hearing The Hogtown Allstars and it sure won’t be the last. And the brisket was delicious”
Lita Edwards & Ron Whitehorne (regulars for the past 10 years) Almonte, ON

“The food was superior! I did not expect this quality for a buffet. And the band was FABULOUS!”
Janice Gautreau, Perth (2nd time attending BOTR)

“Great environment, great food, great music. A place where people from around the world meet. Amazing people!”
Velonah Weke, Kingston (2nd visit)

“Great to have super music shows like this here in God’s country!”
Ross Henniger, Chaffeys Lock (2nd visit)

“10 out of 10 for everything. We are moving to Westport because of the wonderful music venue that is The Cove!”
Elaine Bill, Ottawa (6+ times to BOTR)

Skate the Lake 2017 is finished and it was a big success!

Skate the Lake 2017

Skate the Lake 2017

Portland, Ontario – The 13th annual speed skating event was held on the Big Rideau Lake January 28th & 29th and it was a weekend filled with fun! Waking up early was well worth it for the ice conditions on the lake were amazing on both days. Participants could take part in the 5K & 10K races on Saturday and 25K & 50K regular marathon skating events on Sunday. Kids had the chance to try out their skating skills in a Kids 5K event on Saturday.

There were plenty activities to keep visitors of all ages active and warm on both days.

After the speed skating races, the viewers could enjoy a warm meal, served in the Portland Community Hall. The Portland Hall Board took care of that by organizing a Ham & Bean Brunch.

For the first time since the race started in 2004, people were able to watch the race from above, as helicopter rides were available on Saturday. There were curling and sleigh rides organized for kids and everyone could take a spin on the ice to music after the final race was finished on Saturday. At dusk, there were even fireworks with an after fireworks sit down dinner at the Portland Hall.

If you were part of the event and captured any amazing photos, send them to registration@portlandoutdoors.com and your photo just might get featured on the Portland Outdoors website.

For anyone interested in next year’s event, it will be held January 27th & 28th 2018 and you can already let the organizers know if you have any great ideas or would like to volunteer.

ceThe Lace Up 4 Marsha Walk-a-thon is a fundraiser for Marsha Thake who requires a living donor liver transplant. Marsha grew up in Westport and her family and friends are asking for your help to raise money that will support Martha and her donor through the transplant process. Not all parts of the transplant process are covered by O.H.I.P. and Martha needs your help and support in this time of need.
