Delta Maple Syrup Festival 2016

12The Old Stone Mill NHS will be open for tours from 9 am to 3 pm during Delta’s Maple Syrup Festival. A used Book Sale will take place in the Old Town Hall on Saturday and Sunday, light refreshments will be available. Milling and blacksmithing demonstrations will take place on Saturday, starting at 1 pm. Many other activities taking place in Delta.

Established in 1967, the Delta Maple Syrup Festival was the first maple celebration to be established in the area. In planning for Canada’s Centennial, a small group of dedicated volunteers met regularly in the Council Chambers at the Old Town Hall. As President of the group, Harold Russell worked tirelessly as he contacted every farmer, arranged for sugar shack visits and tours, promoted sugaring off demonstrations and jack wax parties.

In the beginning, the Festival was a three day event held in March which included feeding pancakes and syrup to busloads of students on school trips. In order to keep up with the crowds, meals were served on both floors of the Old Town Hall.

Visitors were able to tour local sugar bushes along with watching maple syrup being bottled and maple candy being made in the Confederated Foods Syrup Plant building.

Over the years, the Festival continued through the efforts of many local residents and Service Clubs
before becoming a project for the Directors of the Delta Agricultural Society. And now, the tradition continues 49 years later!

It is my pleasure to serve as the President of the Delta Agricultural Society during our 185th Anniversary Year. The success of our fair is largely due in part to all of the hard work and planning of our volunteer members along with the generosity of area businesses and individual sponsors. Together with the creativity and enthusiasm of our exhibitors, the above combination produces four interesting and fun filled days for all of us to enjoy.

I hope that this year when you visit the fair, you will notice several changes to our program; all made possible through the efforts of our dedicated volunteers.

Come and experience the fun and excitement of a country fair!

Charles Nichols,
President

Delta Fair July 26-29

Held on the fourth weekend in July (July 26-29, 2012), this is the longest-running country fair in Ontario.

The Old Stone Mill is always a feature point of interest for visitors to the area. On the first day of the Fair there is an annual parade and the Mill Society enters a float designed on a historical theme. On July 28 there will be an Ice Cream Social – “Millie’s marvelous Old Fashioned Ice Cream Social” (immediately following the Delta Fair Parade). All Welcome.
