Bingo Ladies

A New Musical by Grant Tilly – Directed by C.Lee Bates

Lucky charms, big dreams and a troll named Thor. It’s Friday night at the bingo hall and the gloves are off! Carol needs to pay off her debts. Sandi’s hot for Lou, the rock n’ roll bingo caller.  And there’s Irene, the cranky old know-it-all, oxygen tank in tow, who always wins. When Carol steals Irene’s lucky spot, it sets off a course of events that none of them could have predicted. A brand new musical about friendship, gambling and just how far you’ll go for the big win.

 The Last Deadman

15
BarnDoor Theatre Presents “The Last Deadman”: David Jacklin’s legendary drama with music about Canada’s last fatal duel.

First performed in 1983 (the 150th anniversary of the duel), this intense drama looks at the effect of the duel on its victor — a man who very nearly became Canada’s first prime minister!

More than simply a story of a lady’s slighted honour, the duel had far-reaching consequences for the shaping of our nation.

Told with drama, music, humour and excitement, it is a challenging and surprising multi-media theatrical event.

Family Day in Canada – February 15th

4

Family Day is observed in the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Ontario and Saskatchewan on the 15th of February. In British Columbia, Family Day falls on the second Monday of February. Family Day gives families the chance to spend time together. This holiday celebrates the importance of families and family life to people and their communities.

Activities to discover during that day…

On Family Day, many people plan and take part in activities aimed at the whole family. These include visiting art exhibitions, watching movies, skating on outdoor ice rinks, playing board games and taking part in craft activities.

As the weather is usually very cold in February, hot chocolate and freshly baked cookies are popular snacks. Other people use the long weekend as an opportunity for a short winter break or to travel to visit family members or friends.

Public Life

In the provinces of Alberta, Ontario, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia many people have a day off work and schools are generally closed on Family Day. Many businesses and organizations are closed, but post offices may be open. Public transport services may run to their usual or reduced timetables.

In the province of Manitoba, the third Monday of February is a general holiday, known as Louis Riel Day. Many people have a day off work and school and many businesses, organizations and stores are closed. In some communities, stores are open after noon. Public transport services may run to Sunday or holiday timetables. In rural areas, there may be no services.

Background history of the « family day »

Family Day was first held in Canada in the province of Alberta in 1990. It is supposed to reflect the values of family and home that were important to the pioneers who founded Alberta, and give workers the opportunity to spend more time with their families. Family Day was introduced in Saskatchewan in 2007 and in Ontario in 2008. British Columbia observes Family Day as a statutory holiday for the first time in 2013. One of the reasons for introducing Family Day was that there was a long period when there were no holidays from New Year’s Day until Good Friday.

19Vernissage for Felting Artist Zoe Emily Lianga

Zoe Emily Lianga’s work will be on display for the month of February at the MERA Schoolhouse in McDonalds Corners.

This showcase highlights the merging of her separate paths as a designer, felt maker, and fibre artist. Her work will include wall hangings and quilts, clothing, accessories, bags, and home decor. Zoe’s tailored clothes are built off classic lines, sewn from original patterns and made with 100% recycled fabrics.

22Her wearable, felted clothing and accessories, made from luxurious fibres (such as camel, yak, merino, and silk), impart a softness that is without parallel. Each design is developed in its own characteristic way, involving a process of much precision, tactility and organic spontaneity. Design, focusing on Pattern Making and Haute Couture Sewing, has helped her to design, draft and make her intricately tailored visions.

Zoe’s tailored clothes are built off classic lines, sewn from original patterns and made with 100% recycled fabrics. Her background in study at the Richard Robinson Academy of Fashion Design, focusing on Pattern Making and Haute Couture Sewing, has helped her to design, draft and make her intricately tailored visions. Her creativity takes on a different form in her art pieces and wall hangings, both demonstrating her level of workmanship, plus the overall diversity of fibre arts and felt making.

The Governor General’s foot guards Band

21The Governor General’s foot guards Band will be performing at St. Paul’s United Church in Perth (25 Gore St. West). The 30-piece concert band is part of the most senior reserve infantry regiment in Canada, dating back to its formation in 1872. The band is based at Cartier Square Drill Hall in downtown Ottawa. They share a close connection to the Governor General and provide music for many ceremonies in the Ottawa area, including the annual nationally televised Remembrance Day Ceremony held at the War Memorial. Their Director, Lt. Col. Frances Chilton-Mackay, is the Staff Officer of Army Bands for all bands in the Canadian Army. She became the first female director of the ensemble in 2006.

33The band’s full dress uniform with scarlet tunic and bearskin hat is immediately recognizable. Many of the musicians in the ensemble play in the Ceremonial Guard band, which supports the changing of the guard ceremony on Parliament Hill during the summer months. The performance will include a variety of traditional, military and popular music for concert band including the Finale from Saints-Saens Symphony #2 arranged for band and organ involving St. Paul’s Director of Music, Brad Mills. A special segment of the concert program will feature music from the Star Wars movies, celebrating the December release of the seventh movie in the series, Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Admission to the concert is FREE, but donations will be accepted at the door to defray the costs of advertising. Prospective concert-goers are invited to warm up an early February Saturday evening with the exciting sounds of brass, woodwind, percussion and organ in the intimate and accoustically pleasant sanctuary of St. Paul’s United Church.

Fire and Ice

27A Perth signature event. Fire & Ice is a two-tiered, day-long celebration that focuses on both the family and night-time celebrations.

The Town of Perth will officially launch its 200th Anniversary with a 200th Signature Event – FIRE & ICE. Whether you’re a Perth native, a summer cottager or a visitor, each one of us has a reason why we’re Perth Proud. This event celebrates the true Canadian spirit – in the middle of winter! The day-long event will embrace winter with outdoor activities taking place at Conlon Farm, as well as a night out for the grown-ups at the Crystal Palace, featuring an ice bar, live music, fireworks and a bonfire! Discover our history, our community and the people who have brought together 200 years of stories. Here is that story. It’s definitely one worth celebrating. The Chalet will be open from 1-4 p.m. and the public will have washroom access and the canteen will be open, too! Most of these activities are weather proof, and we’ll still have some events on the go.

  • 281-4 p.m.: Family activities at Conlon Farm: tobogganing, outdoor skating, custom-made obstacle course, toddlers’ play area, snolf, official snowball fight facility.
  • 4 p.m.: Get home, get changed, feed the kids (or your pets – or both, for that matter!)
  • 6 p.m.: Head out on the town and dine at one of our popular restaurants
  • 8 p.m. (ish): Head to the Crystal Palace to dance in your winter boots, grab a drink at the ice bar, cozy up at the bonfire and celebrate all things Perth while watching the Fireworks show.
