5th Annual Marathon and half marathon

Registration for the 2018 Town of Celebration Marathon and Half Marathon is now open. The fifth annual race is scheduled for Sunday, January 28.

The Top Ten Reasons to Run the Town of Celebration Marathon & Half Marathon:

  • The Course – Run through one of America’s prettiest neighborhoods (as selected by Forbes Magazine) on what may be the flattest course you will ever run!  The course is certified with USATF, so it is a Boston qualifier.  In 2017 nearly 20% of our marathon runners qualified for Boston.
  • The Shirts & Medals – Tech shirts by Raw Threads featuring innovative bamboo technology and really cool medals for all finishers.
  • Post Race – We know any great race is enhanced when the post race goes beyond “here’s your bagel and banana”.  Our post race will feature food and beverages from area restaurants.  And not just for the early finishers, but for all participants.
  • The Cause – Our goal is to raise a minimum of $50,000 in order to fund scholarships for high school seniors across Osceola County.  An all volunteer organization gives us a great chance at meeting this goal… and your participation will make it happen!  In just four years the race has donated $229,000 to the Osceola Education Foundation and $120,000 to local non-profit clubs, teams, and organizations.
  • Low Entry Fee – Race fees can be pretty outrageous.  You’ll find our race fees to be fair while the race quality and value will be excellent!
  • Smaller is Better – We’ve run the big races, and they are an experience, but we love the smaller races.  Logistics are easier for participants and you will find race organizers are able to give more personal attention  to the racers.
  • Location – The Town of Celebration is located five minutes from Disney World and twenty minutes from the Orlando International Airport with easy highway access.
  • Florida in January – With an average high temperature for the date of 71 degrees and an average low of 48 degrees we have an excellent chance for great running weather.  And for our northern friends, those temps probably look pretty good!
  • Pace Teams – Meeting your race time goal can be a challenge, so we will have Marathon Pacing there to help make it happen.
  • All the Other Kids Are Doing It – Admit it, you used that excuse a time or two while growing up.  Let’s use it again.  Invite your friends to come along and experience what a great small race is all about.  Don’t forget to like us on Facebook!

Run with the Pride!

The Celebration K8 School Run with the Pride 5K Fun Run & Walk is an untimed, sidewalk race to encourage our local students, staff, families and surrounding community members in fitness and good health.

The course starts at the Celebration K8 School Gym (951 Starling Drive), winds through the beautiful neighborhoods of Celebration, along the golf course and down the palm tree-lined Celebration Blvd. To control runner flow, we will have a staggered start with fast-paced runners starting first and walkers bringing up the rear. The course will be well marked and Osceola County deputies & volunteers will be on hand to assist with road crossings. There will be a timing clock at the finish line so runners can record their time, and awards will be given to the top 5 overall finishers.

Please note that this is the same weekend as the Celebration Marathon. If you’re not quite ready for 13.1 or 26.2 miles, sign up for the 5K as a shorter option! Or use the 5K as your pre-race warm-up run with family and friends.

5K entry fees include hydration stations on the course, post-race snacks and beverages, a tech race t-shirt*, a finisher medal and a chance to win some prizes.

Happy Labour Day!

Labour Day (Labor Day in the United States) is an annual holiday to celebrate the achievements of workers. For most countries, Labour Day is synonymous with, or linked with, International Workers’ Day, which occurs on 1 May.
In Canada and the United States, Labour Day is celebrated on the first Monday of September and considered the unofficial end of summer, with summer vacations ending and students returning to school around then.

The form for the celebration of Labor Day was outlined in the first proposal for the holiday: A street parade to exhibit to the public “the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations”, followed by a festival for the workers and their friends and families. This became the pattern for Labor Day celebrations. Speeches by prominent men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the civil significance of the holiday. Still later, by a resolution of the American Federation of Labor convention of 1909, the Sunday preceding Labor Day was adopted as Labor Sunday and dedicated to the spiritual and educational aspects of the Labor movement.

Labor Day is called the “unofficial end of summer” because it marks the end of the cultural summer season. Many take their two-week vacations during the two weeks ending Labor Day weekend. Many fall activities, such as school and sports begin about this time.

Good Neighbor day

Town Hall to recognize National Good Neighbor Day

Each year on September 28, neighbors across the United States celebrate National Good Neighbor Day. This day was created to acknowledge and celebrate the importance of a good neighbor.

In honor of that day and all of the GREAT neighbors right here in Celebration, Town Hall will say ‘thanks’ in their own way. Our Celebration neighbors are invited to stop by outside Town Hall on Thursday, September 28 for a complimentary hot dog and a heartfelt thank you. Members of Town Hall will be distributing hot dogs (appropriate condiments will also be available) between 3:30 – 6 p.m., or while supplies last.

Good neighbors often become friends, they watch out for each other, lend a helping hand and are there for advice when asked.   Neighbors are there when we need to borrow something, to get our mail for us when we are on vacation, to watch our homes and sometimes to watch our children and our pets as well as the many other things we do with our neighbors.

To celebrate National Good Neighbor Day, do something nice for your neighbor today. Use #NationalGoodNeighborDay to post on social media.

St Patrick’s Day

5

St Patrick’s Day is a public holiday in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador on the nearest Monday to March 17 each year. It remembers St Patrick, a missionary who converted many of Ireland’s inhabitants to Christianity in the 5th century. His feast day also celebrates Irish culture.

St Patrick’s Day marks the feast day and anniversary of the death of a Christian missionary known as Patrick. He was born in the year 387, probably somewhere near the present day border between Scotland and England. At the age of 16, he was captured and taken to Ireland as a slave. During this period, he became very religious and after six years he fled back to his family.

St Patrick’s Day celebrations were brought to Canada by Irish immigrants. The day is a bank holiday in Northern Ireland and a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland. In the rest of the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia and New Zealand, it is celebrated, but is not an official holiday.
People who have an Irish background or enjoy Irish culture may hold Irish themed parties and serve traditional dishes, such as Colcannon or Irish stew. Colcannon is a dish of mashed potatoes mixed with kale or cabbage and Irish stew is traditionally made with lamb and root vegetables.

Symbol

The most widely-seen St Patrick’s Day symbols are the colors green, and sometimes orange, and the shamrock. The shamrock is a symbol of Ireland and a registered trademark of the Republic of Ireland. It is the leaf of the clover plant, which grows on the ground, often among grass and an Irish Catholic symbol of the Holy Trinity. It is sometimes confused with the four-leaf clover, which is a variety of the three-leaf clover and is thought to bring good luck.
