Queen Milli of Galt

Did Edward VIII really marry a small-town Ontario schoolteacher in 1919?

There is a roadside graveyard near Galt, Ontario, part of what is now the municipality of Cambridge, on the Grand River near Waterloo. The cemetery is like hundreds of burial grounds in rural Ontario — hushed, historic, fascinating. But this particular site holds a clue, literally etched in stone, to a hundred-year-old mystery.

Inscribed on the monument of Millicent Milroy, a quiet local schoolteacher who died in 1984, are the words “Millicent Milroy, daughter of James and Helen Jane Milroy, Wife of Edward (VIII), Duke of Windsor, 1894 – 1972.”

“It is a historic fact that the Prince of Wales, Edward VIII, visited Galt in 1919, and that Millicent Milroy met him during his royal tour. That’s really where the evidence trail ends,” says Carolee. “But for more than 60 years, Millicent, a sober, upstanding community figure, repeated her story with such clear-eyed conviction that it can’t simply be dismissed. Queen Milli of Galt imagines her romance with the dashing Edward, and how their relationship may have unfolded.”

FRANKENSTEIN: It’s Alive….With Orchestra!

On Friday, October 19th, 2018 from 7:30-9:30 in the Mason Theatre at P&DCI. The 1931 Universal Studio’s “Frankenstein” starring Boris Karloff was produced without a musical background. American composer Michael Shapiro wrote a 70-minute score which will be performed under the dialogue of the film, by the RIDEAU LAKES ORCHESTRA. For modern day movie goers, Shapiro’s haunting music makes a significant impact by adding more emotion to an already dramatic film.

The Ontario premiere of FRANKENSTEIN: It’s Alive…..With Orchestra! Doors open at 6:45pm, tickets available only at the door, Adults $20, students 17 and under $12.

The Rideau Lakes Orchestra, formerly known as Symphonium, has a strong connection with Perth and its area, having performed at the Stewart Park Festival, St Paul’s Church and local high schools. Members of the orchestra hail from Perth and the Ottawa Valley. They are professional musicians, each with a wide range of experience performing in orchestras, military bands and chamber groups. Using both acoustic and electronic instruments, the RLO plays a repertoire as distinctive as its instrumentation. The RLO performed its very first concert at St. James Anglican Church on April 17, 2016.

Town of Perth – July ongoing events 2018

Happy Canada Day!

On July 1, 1867, Canada became a self-governing dominion of Great Britain and a federation of four provinces: Nova Scotia; New Brunswick; Ontario; and Quebec. The anniversary of this date was called Dominion Day until 1982. Since 1983, July 1 has been officially known as Canada Day.

In many towns and cities, municipal governments organize a range of events, often outdoors. These include pancake breakfasts, parades, concerts, carnivals, festivals, firework displays and citizenship ceremonies for new Canadian citizens. The celebrations often have a patriotic mood. Canada’s national flag is widely displayed and a lot of people paint their faces red and white, which are Canada’s national colors. The celebrations in Ottawa, which is Canada’s capital city, are particularly exuberant.

History

On July 1, 1867, the British North Americas Act created the Dominion of Canada as a federation of four provinces. This event is known as the confederation of Canada. The four original provinces were created from the former British colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and the Province of Canada, which was divided into the provinces of Quebec and Ontario. Canada’s boundaries have been extended since 1867. The country now consists of 10 provinces and three territories.

As the anniversary of Confederation, Dominion Day, and later Canada Day, was the date set for a number of important events, such as the first national radio network hookup by the Canadian National Railway (1927); the inauguration of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s cross-country television broadcast, with Governor General Vincent Massey’s Dominion Day speech from Parliament Hill (1958); the flooding of the Saint Lawrence Seaway (1958); the first colour television transmission in Canada (1966); the inauguration of the Order of Canada (1967); and the establishment of “O Canada” as the country’s national anthem (1980). Other events fell on the same day coincidentally, such as the first day of the Battle of the Somme in 1916—shortly after which Newfoundland recognized July 1 as Memorial Day to commemorate the Newfoundland Regiment’s heavy losses during the battle—and the enactment of the Chinese Immigration Act in 1923—leading Chinese-Canadians to refer to July 1 as Humiliation Day and boycott Dominion Day celebrations until the act was repealed in 1947.

Symbol

Canada’s national flag is seen on Canada Day. This consists of two vertical red rectangles separated by a white square. The white square contains a red image of a maple leaf. Canada’s national colors are red and white and are used in many ways on Canada Day. Some people wear red and white clothing and others paint their faces in these colors.

Men on the Tay Concert

The Men of the Tay Concert will be taking place on June 4th, 2018 at the St. James Anglican Church in Perth.

The Men of the Tay was formed in the winter of 2000. A group of 12 men met each week to simply sing and enjoy each other’s company. It was a wonderful time spent together gathered around a piano in the living room, with borrowed music and a few harmonic attempts. It was in the fall of 2002 that the idea of doing something more began and soon the chorus began to grow and expand and actually emerged to perform for the general public.

Now approaching 36 members, it has remained true to its ideals … to come together and sing. Concerts and performances are secondary to the opportunity to work together, to learn about music and to enjoy each other’s company. The chorus attempts to obtain the best music published for the male chorus at its level. It has a wide range of music: from Broadway, to Folk Songs, to Church and even comedy numbers. The chorus could be singing Doo-Wop and then turn around and work in Latin. It is all part of the experience of being a member.

The Men of the Tay meets each Monday from the second or third week of September to the second week of June. The rehearsals start at 7:00 PM and end promptly at 9:00 PM.

Rehearsals are held in the sanctuary at St. James the Apostle (Anglican) Church, 12 Harvey Street Perth, Ontario K7H 1W4. Both choirs normally recess from the end of their Christmas Concert through to the last week of January. The return date flexes a bit depending on the availability of the music, rehearsal space and other membership / music concerns.

Charley’s Aunt by Brandon Thomas

BarnDoor Productions Presents: Charley’s Aunt starting on June 8th, 2018 at the Full Circle Theatre in Perth.

Charley’s Aunt is the longest running farce in London history. It opened THREE YEARS before The Importance of Being Earnest and was still running after Earnest closed.

It’s a “chestnut” in the best sense of the word: always reliable, always warm, always familiar — and still very funny.

Jack and Charley want to ask their girls to tea to propose to them (oh, it’s very proper!) and use the excuse of Charley’s aunt coming to visit to make it right. But, when the venerable lady (“from Brazil, where the nuts come from!”) can’t come, the lads enlist the aid of their chum Babs to impersonate the aunt. Complications, needless to say, arise.

On Saturday, June 16, the Festival will hold its annual Kick-Off to Summer Dance, this year featuring Big Bob Hammond & the Mississauga Delta Blues Band playing the best of the legendary Blues Brothers, the dynamic duo put together by comedy actors Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi as part of their musical sketch on Saturday Night Live.

Real life brothers Stan and Bob Hammond from Peterborough, Ontario, are steeped in the tradition of old Chicago and the tale of Jake and Elwood Blues the two brothers who set out on “a mission from God” to save the orphanage in which they grew up.

Happy Father’s Day!

Father’s Day is an occasion to mark and celebrate the contribution that your own father has made to your life. Many people send or give cards or gifts to their fathers. It is a relatively modern holiday so different families have a range of traditions. Father’s Day is not a federal public holiday in Canada. It falls on a Sunday, which is a day off for many workers so many offices and stores are closed. However, some shopping precincts and stores, as well as restaurants, cafes and entertainment venues, may be particularly busy on Father’s Day.

There are some suggestions that the idea of Father’s Day may originate in pagan sun worship. Some branches of paganism see the Sun as the father of the universe. The June solstice occurs around the same time of year as Father’s Day so some people saw a link between the two.

The idea of a special day to honor fathers and celebrate fatherhood was introduced from the United States. A woman called Sonora Smart Dodd was inspired by the American Mother’s Day celebrations and planned a day to honor fathers early in the 20th century. The first Father’s Day was celebrated in Spokane, Washington on June 19, 1910.

In the United States, there are a range of events, which may have inspired the idea of Father’s Day. One of these was the start of the Mother’s Day tradition in the first decade of the 20th century. Another was a memorial service held in 1908 for a large group of men, many of them fathers, who were killed in a mining accident in Monongah, West Virginia in December 1907.

On Golden Pound

Heartwarming play On Golden Pond opens June 28 at Studio Theatre.

Some stories are timeless, because they’re founded on human truths that never change. They draw from the raw materials of our lives — love, family, longing, jealousy, fear of the future. And the older we get, the more we see ourselves in these wise, enduring narratives.

When the film On Golden Pond opened in theatres in 1981 — yes, 37 years ago — it struck a chord that still resonates across generations. On June 28th, our generation — whether we’re young, old, or somewhere in the middle — will once again be able to experience the heart and humour of On Golden Pond when the stage play opens at the Studio Theatre in Perth.

On Golden Pond premieres at the Studio Theatre on Thursday, June 28th for seven performances, June 28, 29, 30, and July 5, 6 and 7 at 7:30 pm, and July 8 at 2 pm.

Advance tickets are $24 at Tickets Please in the Matheson House Museum Visitor Centre, 11 Gore St. E. (613 485-6434; ticketsplease.ca; in-store, phone, online and credit card purchases) and at the Studio Theatre box office on show nights. Happy Mother’s Day

It is the time for people to thank mothers and mother figures who took the time care for them and help them through life’s challenges.

Early celebrations of Mother’s Day originated from Canada’s neighboring country, the United States. Carnations are a popular Mother’s Day symbol in both Canada and the United States. Some people may choose to wear a carnation as a brooch on Mother’s Day. However, other flowers are also given to mothers or mother figures to symbolize one’s love and appreciation for them.

Many people send cards or gifts to their mother or mother figure or make a special effort to visit her.

Common Mother’s Day gifts are flowers, chocolate, candy, clothing, jewelry and treats, such as a beauty treatment or trip to a spa. Some families organize an outing for all of their members or hold a special meal at home or in a restaurant. In the days and weeks before Mother’s Day, many schools help their pupils to prepare a handmade card or small gift for their mothers.

The origins of Mother’s Day are attributed to different people. Many believe that two women, Julia Ward Howe and Anna Jarvis were important in establishing the tradition of Mother’s Day in the United States. Other sources say that Juliet Calhoun Blakely initiated Mother’s Day in Albion, Michigan, in the late 1800s. Her sons paid tribute to her each year and urged others to honor their mothers.

Victoria Day!

Victoria Day, also known as May Two-Four, May Long, and May Long Weekend, is a Canadian holiday on the Monday preceding May 25. As such, it is the Monday between the 18th to the 24th inclusive, and thus is always the penultimate Monday of May. The date is simultaneously that on which the current Canadian sovereign’s official birthday is recognized.

In some cities, fireworks displays or parades are held to mark Victoria Day. One of the most notable parades is held in the city of Victoria, British Columbia, which was named after Queen Victoria. Many people gather in parks to enjoy fireworks displays, which are particularly impressive in Hamilton and Toronto.

For many people, the long Victoria Day weekend marks the end of the winter and the unofficial start of the spring or summer season. After this weekend, gardeners can be reasonably sure that there will be no more frost until the autumn so they can sow or plant out delicate crops and plants. Victoria Day is marked as a public holiday at a national level. Many people have a day off work and schools are closed.

Background

Queen Victoria was born on May 24, 1819. Following the death of 3 uncles and her father, she became Queen of the United Kingdom on June 20, 1837 and reigned until her death on January 22, 1901. During Victoria’s life, the British Empire expanded considerably. However, her powers as Queen of the United Kingdom were reduced as the House of Commons became more important and powerful in British politics.

The holiday has been observed in Canada since at least 1845, originally falling on Victoria’s actual birthday (24 May 1819). It continues to be celebrated in various fashions across the country; the holiday has always been a distinctly Canadian observance.

The Drawer Boy

City Boy offers to do farm work for free, in Studio Theatre’s production of Micheal Healey’s THE DRAWER BOY

Directed by: Roberta Peets

The play features: Grey Masson, Alfred von Mirbach and Conner Williamson

Free farm help is something no self respecting farmer can ever pass up. In the 1970’s a group of actors and directors from Theatre Passe Muraille in Toronto headed out into the farming communities of Southern Ontario, interviewing local farmers and their families to create a landmark Canadian theatrical event The Farm Show.

This type of theatre was a cooperative-actor driven form of play writing known as “collective-creation”. At first the results didn’t seem like a play, since there were no lights, no costumes, no set-in fact often the venue was a barn with hay bales for seats. Actors would tell the stories they had heard, and would in effect draw a picture of what farming was really like. Often the actors would work on the farms to get first hand experience. At other times they would sit in parlours with the families, drawing out stories as they looked at wedding albums and family scrapbooks and drank countless cups of tea.

In 1999 actor and playwright Micheal Healey reconnected with many of these families, and he in turn was inspired to write the play THE DRAWER BOY. In the play Angus and Morgan, played by Alfred Von Mirbach and Grey Masson, live together on an Ontario farm and have long ago settled into a routine that works well for both of them. Angus handles the accounts, bakes bread, and looks at the stars on clear nights. Morgan keeps the cows milked, the barns cleaned, and the tractor running, and keeps an eye on Angus. They have been friends since before the war. Into their uneventful life steps Miles Potter, , a young actor from the big city, played by Connor Williamson. Miles needs to learn about farming for a theatre project he is involved in, and he offers to work for the two men as a means of gaining insight into their lifestyle. Free farm labor is not something that Morgan is going to turn down, so the deal is struck.

After a lot of gentle comedy about the urban-rural divide, Miles overhears Morgan telling Angus a story from their own broken past. When Miles incorporates the story into his show, and invites Morgan and Angus to the rehearsal, what is shown there disrupts the farmers lives and laughs give way to greater drama. Veteran stage director Roberta Peets manages to pull out both the heart and the humor in this beautiful play about farm life in southern Ontario. Come on down to the theatre, sit a spell, and soak up a wonderful story.

The Drawer Boy premieres at the Studio Theatre in beautiful heritage Perth on Thursday April 5 for seven shows, April 5, 6, 7, 13 and 14 at 7:30 pm and April 8 and 15 at 2 pm.

Talk backs are offered after the performances on 6 and 13.

The Taming

THE TAMING
a comedy by
Lauren Gunderson

April 20, 21, 26, 27, 28 at 8:00 p.m.
April 22 and 29 at 2:00 p.m.

Shakespeare
meets Miss America
meets American politics.

NOTE: very strong language

This show was the most produced play in the U.S. in 2016 AND 2017, but we believe that this is the Canadian premiere!

It’s a searing, outrageous slash through 250 years of American politics, all played out in a hotel room between a “lefty” political hacktivist, a Republican political flunky and Miss Georgia.
Oh, and George Washington, James Madison and Charles Pinkney — and their wives.

It’s as up-to-date as a Trump tweet and twice as funny.

“A funny, fundamentally sound and sane look at the insanity of American politics. I cannot recall having such a good time with a political diatribe in my long and involved life.” The Berkshire Edge blog

“Plenty of big laughs, along with some pained chuckles when she hits too close to the stuff we see on TV every day.” TheatreJones blog

“Gunderson shows that decisions—whether picking a beauty queen or defining a Bill of Rights—are born of messy conflict, collaboration, and compromise.” TheatreStorm blog

(Newspapers just don’t review plays anymore, apparently.)

Call me By Your Name

Nominated for 4 Oscars, including best pictures of the year, it’s the story of a sudden and powerful romance that blossoms between an adolescent boy and summer guest at his parents’ cliff-side mansion on the Italian Riviera.

The pleasures of art, music, food, natural beauty and sexual awakening are evoked and celebrated in “Call Me by Your Name,” an almost sinfully enjoyable movie that both observes and obeys the languid rhythms of a torrid Italian summer.

Elena Bucci, Vanda Capriolo, Amira Casar, Timothée Chalamet, Victoire Du Bois, Esther Garrel, Armie Hammer.
Sexuality, nudity and some coarse language. Ages 16+
Movies are shown on a nice big 9′ x 16′ screen, with great sound, comfy seats and, of course, popcorn.
