Heritage Mica Days – Corn Roast at the Campfire Pit

Perth Ontario CommunityJoin us at the Campfire Pit near the park amphitheatre in Murphy’s Point for an old-fashioned corn roast this  July 26 from 6-10pm. Bring your appetites and enjoy local Lanark County corn smothered in butter…mmmm! There are log benches around the campfire, but you may also want to bring a lawn chair.

Fresh boiled cobs of corn are available for $1.00 each and the Friends of Murphys Point will also be selling soft drinks and cookies.  Corn roast ends when the corn runs out, so come early! Plan to stay at the amphitheatre for the evening program that starts at 8 p.m.  Dogs are permitted on a 6 foot leash but must be kept away from the food service area. The site is wheelchair accessible.

Remember you must hold a valid Ontario Parks vehicle day use pass, seasonal pass or camping permit for park entry. Your park entry permit can be purchased at the main park gate. Why not come to the park earlier in the day and spend time at the beach or hike one of the many trails before the corn roast? Your vehicle permit is good for the whole day!

Japanese Textile Star at MVTM
Artist Talk & Opening Reception

July 10, 2014 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm
The Mississippi Valley Textile Museum (MVTM) is thrilled to be hosting the exhibition “Reiko Sudo + NUNO, Textiles from Japan,” curated by Alan Elder of the Canadian Museum of History. The exhibition runs from 11 July to 22 November with an artist’s talk and opening remarks at the Old Almonte Town Hall, hosted by the Town of Mississippi Mills on Thursday 10 July at 5 pm, followed by an opening reception at the Museum from 6 to 8 pm.

The installation of the exhibition takes the architecture of the Norah Rosamond Hughes Gallery as its starting point. An array of amazing fabrics will “dress” the gallery’s many columns. This wonderful historic building where workers produced award-winning textiles for generations is the perfect showplace for astonishing fabrics that range from “Snowy Branches” to “Scrapyard.” You won’t want to miss this rare opportunity to enjoy the work of this international textile star!

For information call the Museum at 613-256-3754. The Mississippi Valley Textile Museum is located at 3 Rosamond St. E. in Almonte.

Chemical lace workshop
Friday, July 11 from 10am-1pm
If you have worked with embroidering on silk before and want to build on skills at the intermediate or advanced level, join artist Reiko Sudo at the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum on July 11 for the workshop “Chemical Lace.” In this one-day workshop students will use a water-soluble fabric for the base. NUNO has used the chemical lace technique in many of its textiles including ‘Tsugihagi’, where—after attaching a patchwork of swatches to the base fabric, the base is dissolved in water leaving  a survey of NUNO original fabrics in different colours, patterns and materials all in one cloth.

Don’t miss this great opportunity to learn new techniques or improve your skills. The workshop will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, July 11 in the museum’s Mill Workers’ Learning Centre. The cost is $150 to pre-register, students will need to bring their own scraps of fabrics and a sewing machine. There is a maximum of 10 students, and to secure a spot you must register by June 27. You can call the museum at 613 256-3754 ext. 6 or drop by the museum at 3 Rosamond St. E. in Almonte.
