BETWEEN THE LINES: A Canadian Songwriter Summit with Dean McTaggart, Terry Tufts, Rick Fines, and Kevin Head
Old friends reunite on stage for a special performance before the day of Cove mainstay, Kevin Head’s marriage!
Kevin Head is an accomplished singer/songwriter. You can read about him or hear him regularly at The Cove. He is the Host of the evening!
Terry Tufts
…is a finger-style guitarist living off-grid with his wife and daughter in the bush in North Frontenac, Ontario.
Terry has been playing music since 1974. His father’s job with the Canadian Government moved the family to Denver, Colorado in the U.S. in the 1960’s at a time when the folk and rock music genres were influencing opinion everywhere.
In 1974 he moved to Fredericton, New Brunswick, to begin pursuing his own musical career as a singer-songwriter and guitarist, as well as working as a session musician and sideman for a variety of artists including David Francey, Ian Tamblyn, The Arrogant Worms, Wayne Rostad, Susan Aglukark, and George Fox. He has 7 albums to his credit, one unreleased. He blends a well-traveled personal history into music without boundaries.
Dean McTaggart
…his professional career started as the lead singer/songwriter for the Canadian rock/pop band “The Arrows” in 1981. An independent release”Misunderstood” was followed by two albums for A&M records which produced the hit singles “Meet me in the Middle”,”Talk Talk”, and “Heart of the City”. When the band broke up in 1986 Dean went on to be a staff songwriter, penning many hits including “Heaven Help my Heart” – a top ten song for country superstar Wynonna Judd, ” Darkhorse” – a number one in Canada for Amanda Marshall which Elton John called ‘a sure fire hit’ on Rosie O’Donnell, ”Birmingham’ – a top twenty song worldwide for Amanda Marshall, as well as hits for Anne Murray, Terri Clark, Rita Coolidge, The Guess Who, Johnny Reid, The Rankin Family, Blues artists Shakura S’Aida, Danny Brooks and many others.
In 1998, McTaggart was nominated for the Juno Award for “Songwriter of the Year” for his works recorded by Amanda Marshall, Wynonna Judd and Tina Arena. Dean has released three solo discs, the most recent being 2010’s Drop the Needle in the Groove.
Dean’s most recent project is an 8 piece soul band called Ultrasound that features a who’s who of Canadian musicians…
(here’s kind of a fun article for you from the 1998 issue of Billboard Magazine on Dean: http://books.google.ca/books?id=-AkEAAAAMBAJ&lpg=PA48&ots=c3_WCZ7UlE&dq=dean%20mctaggart%20songwriter&pg=PA48#v=onepage&q=dean%20mctaggart%20songwriter&f=false)
Rick Fines
…based in Peterborough, Rick Fines is one of Canada’s leading blues, roots and slide guitarists, playing The Cove 5 times for the Blues on the Rideau Series. A veteran of the North American folk and blues circuits, Rick has won the Maple Blues Award as a solo artist, and has won a Juno Award and several Thomas Handy Awards for his work with the band Jackson Delta. Known for his virtuosic finger-style and slide guitar playing and his engaging stage presence, Rick delights audiences with soulful songs, wonderful stories and a mesmerizing musical experience.
Rick has performed and collaborated with a wide range of musicians, including legendary blues piano player Pinetop Perkins, famed songstress Colleen Peterson and folk icon Penny Lang, as well as Willie P. Bennett, Carlos del Junco, Suzie Vinnick and many more.
Rick has worked as a youth mentor at the Winnipeg Folk Festival and is a regular participant in Ottawa Bluesfest’s popular “Blues in the Schools” program. His obvious love of roots music is an inspiration to all. Listeners are fascinated by his playing, singing and songwriting skills, as well as his vast knowledge and love of the musical and social history of the blues.
Rick’s acclaimed CDs include “Nothing Halfway“, “Out Of The Living Room“, “Arcadia” and “Live At The Harvest “. He has also recorded an instructional DVD to share his exceptional guitar techniques.

Afiara String Quartet

Afiara WeekendThe Wesport Centre for Creative Learning is pleased to inform you of a rare and aspirational event taking place at the WCCL, the renowned Afiara Quartet will be giving two performances at the former Stepping Stone Inn. This is an opportunity you will not want to miss. Please join us for an intimate private concert, gala reception and exquisite private dinner on the evening of Friday September 19 (with surprise guests), or join us for a more informal community performance of the Afiara Quartet the evening of Sunday September 21….or both as the performances will be quite different from one another.

The Afiara Quartet is a dynamic and award-winning ensemble, described as “a revelation” (La Presse) with performances balancing “intensity and commitment” and “frequent moments of tenderness” (Montreal Gazette). After residencies at The Juilliard School and San Francisco State University, the Afiara are currently Fellowship Quartet at the Royal Conservatory of Music. The ensemble is winner of the Young Canadian Musicians Award, Concert Artist Guild, Munich ARD, and Banff International String Quartet Competitions, including the latter’s Szekely Prize for the best interpretation of Beethoven. The Afiara has performed throughout the Americas, Europe, and Asia, at such venues as Carnegie Hall’s Zankel and Weill Halls, the Kennedy Center, Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, Library of Congress in DC, Sao Paulo’s Museum of Modern Art, Pro Musica of San Miguel de Allende, London’s Wigmore Hall, Austria’s Esterhazy Palace, Munich’s Prinz Regenten Theatre, Amsterdam’s Muziekgebouw, and the Royal Library in Copenhagen. Their relentless pursuit of beauty and discovery is documented in over 25 commissions of new music, new educational outreach initiatives for school children funded by the Ontario Arts Council, and projects with jazz virtuoso Uri Caine, Latin Grammy Award-winning producer Javier Limon, and ground-breaking scratch DJ, Kid Koala. The Afiara String Quartet takes it’s name from the Spanish ‘fiar’ meaning ‘to trust’ a basic element of the depth and joy of it’s music making.  Truly a unique event well worth attending.

Please review the attached options and let us know which you would like to reserve. You can reach us atwww.centreforcreativelearning.com or by calling us at 613 273-2226. Check out the Afiara String Quartet at www.afiara.com

Blues On the Rideau

8.5x11_BOTR 2014_15 DIGITALBlues On The Rideau – the famous Dinner & Show Fundraiser Series featuring some of Canada’s best Blues artists which takes place once a month every year from October through May (excluding December) at The Cove Country Inn & Spa in Westport, Ontario – just announced their 2014/15 Line-Up – their 10th Anniversary season!

“We are very pleased with this year’s Line-Up” says James Doran, Producer of the Series. “It’s a combination of some of the most popular bands to have ever played BOTR – Fathead, Jack de Kezyer, The Hogtown Allstars, Paul Reddick and David Rotundo – plus a couple of great acts that have never been here before – Vancouver’s Harpdog Brown and the Paul James Band from Toronto. All of these artists have either won or been nominated for Juno and/or Maple Blues Awards in the past. They really are the cream of the crop and it’s wonderful to be able to see and dance to them up close and personal in the intimate setting of The Cove Inn”.

Seamus Cowan, Manager of The Cove Inn and an excellent musician himself said “It’s hard to believe that this little Series that started 10 years ago has grown into what it is today. We are known for our great regular LIVE music at The Cove and Blues On The Rideau is the jewel in the crown. You would normally have to go to a big city to hear bands of this caliber. We’re honoured to provide such high quality entertainment to our customers at such a reasonable price – and raise money for the community at the same time. We thank James & Diane Doran from Choose The Blues Productions for bringing BOTR to The Cove and keeping it going all these years”.

Despite cost increases the price for these nights remains at $60 pp this year (the same for the past 3 years). That includes a delicious full course buffet dinner, the show and dancing. Proceeds from all BOTR nights go to support different local Westport charities. The Series has raised over $50,000 for the community over the past 9 years and the goal is to hit another $5K this season.
