COMMUNITY WORKSHOP SERIES TO DISCUSS PROPOSED NEW LIBRARY AND CIVIC CENTER

Architects, on behalf of the City of Winter Park and the Winter Park Public
Library. The purpose of the workshops is to gather insights and input from
Winter Park residents on the specific location, appearance and design of
the proposed new Winter Park Public Library and civic center facility.

Workshop attendees will explore and help create placemaking possibilities
that carefully integrate the new library/civic center within the northern
sector of Martin Luther King, Jr. Park. The results of the workshops will
be integrated into conceptual designs to be presented to the residents and
City Commission.

Delve into the opportunities and challenges presented by various sites
within the northern sector of Martin Luther King, Jr. Park. This workshop
will feature the expertise of Fred Kent and Elena Madison, executives with
the nonprofit Project for Public Spaces, an organization dedicated to
creating public places that foster great communities, parks and civic
spaces. Also facilitating will be Dr. Norman Jacknis of Columbia
University, a senior fellow at the Intelligent Community Forum, a
nationally recognized expert in the future of libraries, and a key advisor
to The Aspen Institute’s effort “Rising to the Challenge: Re-envisioning
Public Libraries.”

*Community Workshop 2: Building Design Possibilities*

Sunday, August 23, from 1 to 3 p.m.

*Rachael D. Murrah Civic Center, 1050 W. Morse Blvd.*

Participants will explore many different style options for the interior
and exterior design concepts and see how design elements can be integrated
into Morse Boulevard, surrounding neighborhoods, and the existing park.
Attendees will have an opportunity to express their preferences as to which
styles and characteristics work best with Winter Park’s unique
architectural character and vision for a new 21st century library and
civic center facility.

*Community Workshop 3: Community Findings & Direction*

Thursday, September 17, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

*Location TBD*

Participants will review the results of the placemaking and building
appearance workshops, and view a 2-D conceptual site plan as well as 3-D
conceptual building-site visualization that incorporates the community’s
input. Attendees will be encouraged to give feedback to help adjust the
concepts so they most accurately reflect the wants and needs of the Winter
Park community.

Winter Park High School Bands Memorial Weekend Pops Concert

The Winter Park High School Bands will present two concerts in May to finish the band program’s 75th anniversary season. The Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, and Freshman Jazz Band will perform an array of music that showcases the bands tradition of musical excellence.

The Spring Concert will be held on Wednesday, May 6, and will feature works by Aaron Copland, Paul Hindemith, and David Gillingham. It will also feature senior concerto winner Sara Nazarian on the Chaminade flute concerto.

The Memorial Weekend Pops Concert will be held on Friday, May 22, and will include lighter works by Frank Ticheli, Chuck Mangione, and John Philip Sousa. It will feature our second senior concerto winner, Matthew Mignardi, on the famous Carnival of Venice. The concert will conclude with a salute to our nation with performances of the Armed Forces Salute, America the Beautiful, and Stars and Stripes Forever!

Both concerts begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Ann Derflinger Auditorium on the Winter Park High School main campus, 2100 Summerfield Road, Winter Park, FL 32792. Admission is free, and the public is warmly invited to attend.

The Winter Park High School bands are under the direction of Director Christopher Blackmer, and Associate Director Michael Clemente.

Spring Cleanup

It’s that time of year again! Now is the time for spring cleaning just in time for the summer. The City of Winter Park encourages residents to participate in the city’s annual Spring Cleanup which will be held during the month of May. The annual Spring Cleanup provides an extra “bonus” pickup day so that residents can dispose of old furniture, broken appliances and other bulky items. To take advantage of this convenient service, residents must place their items curbside after 5 p.m. on the evening prior to their second regularly scheduled pickup day. Households North of Fairbanks/Aloma avenues – week of May 4. Households South of Fairbanks/Aloma avenues – week of May 11. (Hazardous waste and yard waste is not included in the spring cleanup.)

Music at Casa Feliz Historic Museum

Alborea Dances FlamencoCasa de Feliz invites you to come and enjoy some mesmerizing flamenco dancing by Alborea Dances Flamenco. Show starts on Sunday, December 7, from 12-3pm.

Alborea Dances is a multicultural Entertainment Dance Company, created and directed by Jenny and Ernesto Caballero, who have been dedicated to the world of dance for more than 20 years. They have combined their experiences as dance educators, performers, choreographers and events coordinators, to present dances from Spain, Bolivia and Middle Eastern countries. After many years of performing in International festivals and important venues around South America, Europe and the United States, life brought them to Florida to delight their audiences on the stages of Universal Studios, Sea World, Walt Disney World, Resorts, Hotels and Conventions. Also, they have been featured on The Travel Channel’s Great Hotels Series and Orange County TV’s “Central Florida’s World of Dance” series.

All ticket proceeds will benefit Feed the Need Winter Park, a community-wide effort to raise funds for Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida.

Winter Park Christmas Parade

ID-100115842The 2014 Winter Park Christmas Parade will take place on Saturday, December 6, at 9am along the streets of Park Avenue in Downtown Winter Park. The parade features over 100 parade units including marching bands, police and fire departments, and Disney World and Sea World floats. After the parade, go ice skating in the West Meadow in Central Park in the outdoor skating rink.

Pancake Breakfast
Before and during the parade, Leadership Winter Park will host their annual Pancake Breakfast at the Central Park stage from7:00-10:30 a.m.

Tickets for the breakfast are $6.00 for adults and $4.00 for children. Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling (407) 644-8281. Proceeds benefit Winter Park area elementary schools. The parade is free.

The Winter Park Concours motoring event features some of the most highly-regarded, judged classic and exotic cars in the United States will be staged 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., Sunday, Nov 16, 2014 on the grounds of Winter Park Country Club, located on the north side of Winter Park’s popular Park Avenue shopping district.

Since its inception in 2002, the Winter Park Concours has become one of the most prestigious ranked exotic classic car shows in the United States.

The 2014 Winter Park Concours will display more than 160 of the world’s most prestigious automobiles, climaxing three days of related classic auto events throughout the metropolitan Orlando area. Winter Park High School Band 75th Anniversary Fall Concert

ID-10065939On Thursday, October 16, the Winter Park High School Bands will commence their 75th Anniversary Year with a fall concert. Most of the Winter Park High School Bands will perform, including the Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, and Jazz Ensemble, and the concert will feature a wide variety of music. 

The fall concert is part of the Homecoming events during the week and, in a special celebration of the 75th year of the Winter Park High School band program, many former WPHS band directors and band alumni will be in attendance.

The concert begins at 7:00 p.m. in the Ann Derflinger Auditorium on the Winter Park High School main campus, 2100 Summerfield Road, Winter Park, FL 32792. Admission is free, and the public is warmly invited to attend.
