Hailed the largest Santa Claus parade in the Ottawa Valley you can join thousands of spectators to watch hundreds of sparkling floats lit by LED bulbs as the Business Improvement Association hosts its annual evening parade on November 26th, 2016.

The parade begins at 5 p.m. at Carambeck School and travels up the town’s main thoroughfare Bridge Street. After Santa’s sleigh passes through the town spectators can congregate at the Carleton Place and District Memorial Hospital for hot chocolate, caroling and the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony. Proceeds support the Lanark County Food Bank.

A completed participant registration form and payment of  $20 will secure your place in the Candy Land Christmas Parade.

Interval House is the only dedicated anti-violence organization in the County. From support services, crisis line, emergency shelter to outreach services and public education, Lanark County Interval House is reaching out, rising up and supporting women’s empowerment, strength and courage.

Women’s Fair demonstrates true leadership

The herstory of the Women’s Fair is one that LCIH is most proud of, as the legacy of leadership and commitment is remarkable. It combines two essential goals of the work of LCIH; it raises much-needed funds to support our many programs and it offers a venue for public education on the issues facing women and their children fleeing and or living with violence in their homes.

Without the Women’s Fair the agency would be required to raise many more thousands of dollars to offer the direct service supports to women in Lanark County.

We appreciate the support of the community as it is an integral part of the foundation so we hope to see you at the fair.

On October 29th, 2016 enjoy the annual charity event hosted by the Captain Hooper Chapter of the IODE. It features a full day of crafts from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Carleton Place Arena-Upper Hall.

Admission is free and there are door prizes. The Annual Maskeraid Parade in Carleton Place is going to be a spook-tacular night downtown. Dozens of captivatingly spooky floats and costumed participants will be marching down Bridge Street on October 24th, 2016. Beginning at 7 pm, the parade will kick off at Heritage Mall on Lansdowne Avenue and travel down Bridge Street, ending at Mill Street by the Town Hall. The Maskeraid Parade is in support of the Lanark County Food Bank, making it an extra special night.
Make this Halloween extra exciting by building the scariest and most imaginative float together with your neighbourhood. Schools, sports teams, community and social groups are also encouraged to showcase their creative side with an elaborate float or by creating a Food Bank challenge between other groups.

Everyone is welcome downtown to watch the ghosts and goblins float down Bridge Street into the dark abyss. Spectators are encouraged to dress up in a costume, get into the spirit, and celebrate Halloween. If you want to see a parade that is both haunting and enchanting, come celebrate the BIA Maskeraid Parade on October 24th, 2016 in Carleton Place.

The annual Country Harvest Music Show will take place on October 16th, 2016 at the upper hall of the Carleton Place arena. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. The evening is packed with great Ottawa Valley Country Music. The event is licenced and snacks are available during intermission.

The upcoming Carleton Place venture is one of the most anticipated musical events of the year in Lanark County and west Ottawa. Thanksgiving day in Canada is on October 10, 2016.

Thanksgiving Day in Canada has been a holiday on the second Monday of October since 1957. It is a chance for people to give thanks for a good harvest and other fortunes in the past year.

Many people have a day off work on the second Monday of October. They often use the three-day Thanksgiving weekend to visit family or friends who live far away, or to receive them in their own homes.

Many people also prepare a special meal to eat at some point during the long weekend. Traditionally, this included roast turkey and seasonal produce, such as pumpkin, corn ears and pecan nuts. Now, the meal may consist of other foods, particularly if the family is of non-European descent.

The native peoples of the Americas held ceremonies and festivals to celebrate the completion and bounty of the harvest long before European explorers and settlers arrived in what is now Canada. Early European thanksgivings were held to give thanks for some special fortune. An early example is the ceremony the explorer Martin Frobisher held in 1578 after he had survived the long journey in his quest to find a northern passage from Europe to Asia.

From the end of the First World War until 1930, both Armistice Day and Thanksgiving Day were celebrated on the Monday closest to November 11, the anniversary of the official end of hostilities in World War I. In 1931, Armistice Day was renamed Remembrance Day and Thanksgiving Day was moved to a Monday in October. Since 1957, Thanksgiving Day has always been held on the second Monday in October.

Thanksgiving Day in Canada is linked to the European tradition of harvest festivals. A common image seen at this time of year is a cornucopia, or horn, filled with seasonal fruit and vegetables. The cornucopia, which means “Horn of Plenty” in Latin, was a symbol of bounty and plenty in ancient Greece. Turkeys, pumpkins, ears of corn and large displays of food are also used to symbolize Thanksgiving Day. Other popular activities include outdoor breaks to admire the spectacular colors of the Canadian autumn, hiking, and fishing.

Come and join us for Run/walk Fundraiser 5 Km on Saturday September 24th, 2016. The Brett Pearson Run For Your Life Walk/Run will take place from 9 am to 1 pm.

The Brett Pearson Run for Your Life is a 5km run/walk fundraiser that has a mission of bringing suicide and substance abuse out of the shadows and into the light. Online registration closes at 11:59 PM on September 23, 2016. Onsite registration is available on day of the event from 8:30 AM to 10:00 AM.

The run takes place on the Mississippi River Walk Trail. A warm up prior to the 5k run/walk will be provided by Greco Carleton Place. Meet up is at the Carleton Place Town Square, behind the Carleton Place Town Hall.
