Concerts By Traditional Flamenco Duo

Their concerts of traditional flamenco have captivated audiences not only in parts of the world where flamenco music has its roots – India, the Middle East and Europe – but have taken Marta and Richard as singer and guitarist to countries not usually associated with flamenco, such as Albania and Belize.

Flamenco in Canada too is increasingly popular, and while Marta and Richard normally appear as a flamenco duo, they at times accompany dancers. Both from musical backgrounds, they were married in 1989, began to perform together soon afterwards and now live in Ontario.

They have performed in Festivals as the Northern Flamenco Festival, St. Petersburg, Russia; International Guitar Festival, Bute, Scotland; SimFest film festival , Tirgu Mures, Romania; Festival of Art and Music, Brasov, Romania; Multi-cultural Festival, Berat, Albania; Inter-cultural Festival, Budapest, Hungary; Hudson Music Festival, Quebec and Rhythmfest, Barrie, Ontario.

Tickets at the door or from Shadowfax, 67 Foster Street, Perth.

Happy labour day!

Labour Day (Labor Day in the United States) is an annual holiday to celebrate the achievements of workers. For most countries, Labour Day is synonymous with, or linked with, International Workers’ Day, which occurs on 1 May.
In Canada and the United States, Labour Day is celebrated on the first Monday of September and considered the unofficial end of summer, with summer vacations ending and students returning to school around then.

The form for the celebration of Labor Day was outlined in the first proposal for the holiday: A street parade to exhibit to the public “the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations”, followed by a festival for the workers and their friends and families. This became the pattern for Labor Day celebrations. Speeches by prominent men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the civil significance of the holiday. Still later, by a resolution of the American Federation of Labor convention of 1909, the Sunday preceding Labor Day was adopted as Labor Sunday and dedicated to the spiritual and educational aspects of the Labor movement.

Labor Day is called the “unofficial end of summer” because it marks the end of the cultural summer season. Many take their two-week vacations during the two weeks ending Labor Day weekend. Many fall activities, such as school and sports begin about this time.

Have you ever wondered about:
How safe is our water?
Should I be testing my well?
Is bottled water better to drink than tap water?
Where is the best paddling and camping in the area?
What are invasive species, and should I worry?
What is the status of blue green algae?
Are zebra mussels and loosestrife still a problem?
Are major changes underway in our lake and stream water levels?
What is being done with the Haggart and the Bobs Lake dams?

For the Children:
This is a fun and informative morning featuring the popular Paddling Puppeteers, our educational ‘fish pond’, the Perth & District Library story corner, water critters display, and prizes for all.
