The Wednesday Morning Group Clubs at Mc Martin House

14

McMartin House, a National Historic Site owned by the Ontario Heritage Trust, is still home today to the Perth District Senior Craft Fellowship.
Some people play Bridge or Euchre for intellectual stimulation and social interaction.  Others learn crafts with a craft club (for the same reasons).  Still others find the same sorts of satisfaction in a book club.  “There are many different types of book clubs, but they all have the same goal: To read, discuss, and learn from a book”.
McMartin House hosts two different groups, one which meets the first Wednesday Morning of the month from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 noon, BookClubW1 (directed by Doris Coates) and one that meets on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays from 9:30 to 11:30, BookClubW2&4 directed by Ruth Craig.

Share a laugh over a game of bridge, take a hook rug class on Celtic designs or practice your best line dancing moves. These activities and much more are available to seniors at the historical McMartin House.

Doris Coates, Activity Director for BookClubW1, the 1st Wednesday Book Club, reports that this club has been meeting at McMartin House each month from September to June for over fifteen years. Book selections for the coming year are made at our June meeting, when we also select our monthly discussion leader. Our selections are mainly fiction but have included other genres, even poetry. Each month we exchange ideas, thoughts and research on our book selection and the book’s author.

McMartin House Membership is required.  One $20 Annual Membership Fee permits a member to join any number of activities. Most activities have small charges each session to cover supplies, resources, refreshments etc.

The Perth 23rd Annual Perth Autumn Studio Tour takes place October 8th-10th, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day. This tour combines the traditional with the contemporary, and has become part of Thanksgiving weekend and taking in the fall colours of Eastern Ontario.

The 25 artisans participating in the tour are known for the quality as well as the originality of their work. Traditional methods are developed to new levels of creativity and time-honoured tools and skills are used in new ways.

These craftspeople introduce new materials and techniques to stretch the imagination and continually renew their craft. Every year, new artists join the tour bringing new ideas, new ways of manipulating their materials and creative ways to use old ideas.

The Tour is an excellent opportunity to see the artisans’ workspace and environment. Take time out to enjoy a Harvest lunch prepared with local and seasonal ingredients at Brooke Valley School from 11:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Your Time to Sing – MERA Community Choir is taking place on wednesday mornings  from 10:30 am – 12:00 pm between September 21 through November 23, 2016.

New singers can pay a drop-in fee of $10 per session for two sessions to see whether the format works for them.  For continuity sake, there is not a pay-as-you-go option.

Registration: You must pre-register with Marilyn at meraschoolhouse@bell.net  as we need at least 12 people to proceed.

Song Leader

Almonte-based Jennifer Noxon sang her way through summer camps and school musicals, lead an adult ESL choir, and performed as a contemporary singer/songwriter on the folk circuit for 10 years. Most recently she acted as vocal coach for Fern Martin’s smash hit Trashdance!  Tired of hearing “I wish I could sing” from various adults in her community, Jennifer Noxon set ofproceedf to complete a two-week intensive community choir training course in Victoria, BC – offered by the founders of the Ubuntu Choir Network

Why Sing?  “When you sing, musical vibrations move through you, altering your physical and emotional landscape. Group singing, for those who have done it, is the most exhilarating and transformative of all. It takes something incredibly intimate, a sound that begins inside you, shares it with a roomful of people and it comes back as something even more thrilling: harmony,” writes Stacy Horn in Time magazine (8/16/13).
The fee is $100.

Cyclosportif Perth – 2016 Cycle Tour

15

Cyclosportif Perth – Cycle Tour will be taking place on September 24th, 2016, starting at the Perth Lions Club.

The Perth area is a beautiful and well kept secret for cycling. Maybe surprisingly, the area also has a tremendous network of dirt roads and trails on which to ride. These routes can be used to cut across some of the busier paved roads.  They also tend to go in areas not normally seen on two wheels.  Some of the best riding can be found on these routes, and this is your chance to check them out!

Late September brings with it the beginning of the beautiful fall colours in the Rideau Lakes Township and we want you to experience it firsthand. Come join hundreds of cyclists on the roads in, around and between Perth, Murphy’s Point, Portland, and Westport.

Cyclosportive Perth is not a race–there will be no results and no timed sections.  You can go hard if you want, or you can simply take your time and enjoy the scenery.

We’ve got something for most everyone, from “The Roadie 100k” to “The Roadie Century” to the even more adventurous folks who like a bit of dirt and gravel with “The Dirty Version”–100k on a mix of paved and dirt roads.
