Perth Citizens’ Band Concert “4th Summer Pops Concert”

The Perth Citizens’ Band has been an integral part of the musical and cultural heritage of the Town of Perth since 1852 and is the oldest continuously operating band in Canada. The continuity of the band from 1852 has been recorded in a book entitled, “ Sound the Trumpet “ written by local archivist, Daphne Overhill, published in 2002.

The band is comprised of members from Perth and surrounding areas of Lanark County. Every Tuesday night at 7:30 the band meets for rehearsal in a specially designated room upstairs in the Perth Town Hall. A wide variety of music is rehearsed from the bands’ extensive library, ranging from classics by Mozart, Handel etc. through the Gay Nineties, The Swing Era, the Beetles, Broadway, and contemporary works. Band membership is about 50 and includes all ages from teens to seniors with skill levels from beginners to professional. Some members also contribute time to other local groups such as the “Saints and Sinners” , The Perth Community Choir, and The Last Duel Brass Quintet. The band is directed by Brian Tackaberry, a professional high school music teacher.

Music is performed in public throughout the Town and surrounding areas including venues such as churches, schools, special events, parades and an annual summer concert series on the bandstand in Stewart Park behind the Town Hall. Historically, the band has played at Ontario’s Bicentennial celebrations in Toronto, the sending of the Perth’s Mammoth Cheese to The Chicago World’s Fair and more recently, at The Governor Generals Garden Party at Rideau hall and the Town band Festival in Orono, Ontario.

The free concerts in Stewart Park are performed every other Thursday at 7:30 PM starting in the second week of June through the third week of August and include a Strawberry Social starting at 7 PM for the second concert. The band does a number of parades throughout the year including the Perth Fair Parade, parades for various local celebrations in other towns and typically four Santa Claus Parades in various towns. A major part of the bands funding for operating expenses comes from these parades. The band also does an annual Christmas concert, an annual “ Last Night At The Proms Concert ” plus a number of other concerts during each year.

All concerts are FREE to the public and are held in historic Stewart Park just behind the Perth Town Hall.
Bring along a lawn chair or simply enjoy a leisurely stroll through the park.

Academy of Musical Theatre: Beatlemania!

With live band Beatlejuice at the Stewart Park Festival!

“Lets all get up and dance to a song that was a hit before your parents were born.”**

Seriously!

Academy of Musical Theatre presents “Beatlemania” at the Stewart Park Festival on July 20th, 2019.

The hey day of the “Fab Four” may seem like ancient history to some, but for us they’re timeless. John, Paul, George, and Ringo produced some of the most beautiful songs ever and have inspired generations of other songwriters and performers, and now you can be part of their timeless magic.

Not only will we all get to sing and move to some of the greatest pop songs ever written – like Let it Be, I Wanna Hold Your Hand, A Hard Day’s Night, Yellow Submarine, and many more – but we’ll also accompanied by a live band! The acclaimed group, Beatlejuice, will be joining us during rehearsals and the final performance.

Join us as we celebrate the lives and music these musical icons from their early years until their final album.  The show follows the history of John, Paul, George and Ringo’s incredible partnership, and celebrates their prolific diversity of music and style, which still permeates our culture even today!

Classic Theatre Festival Presents Bernard Shaw’s “Pygmalion”

Classic Theatre Festival Presents Bernard Shaw’s “Pygmalion” from July 19th to August 12th, 2019 at the St. James Anglican Church Auditorium in Perth.

When a bombastic professor of dialects tries to turn a working-class flower girl into an upper-class lady, comic sparks fly in this most popular of Shaw’s plays (the basis for the musical My Fair Lady). Full of unforgettable Shavian characters – Henry Higgins, Eliza Doolittle, Colonel Pickering, and Alfred Doolittle, among others – it’s a legendary satire on class, gender, and particularly British mannerisms all served up with gentle and loving humour.

You will feel warmly welcomed and always entertained at the Classic Theatre Festival. Located in an intimate, air conditioned, wheelchair accessible 120-seat theatre at historic St. James Anglican Church, our focus is on professional quality with a community feel. Many audience members comment that our shows leave them with the same heartfelt sensation they get when watching the best of classic movies.

Stroll down memory lane and test your knowledge of Canadian theatre history with artifacts and press materials from the Stratford and Shaw Festivals, among many others. See if you can name the famous actor who appeared on a Canadian stage, and take in new historical themes each summer as part of this permanent lobby fixture.
