Yet let’s also be aware progress has slowed in many places across the world, so urgent action is needed to accelerate gender parity.

Will you help challenge conscious and unconscious bias? Imagine a world where women and girls can thrive. This International Women’s Day, what will you do to drive gender parity? How can you help women and girls achieve their ambitions? The World Economic Forum predicts the gender gap won’t close entirely until 2133. That’s way too long to wait. Family Day in Canada – February 15th

4

Family Day is observed in the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Ontario and Saskatchewan on the 15th of February. In British Columbia, Family Day falls on the second Monday of February. Family Day gives families the chance to spend time together. This holiday celebrates the importance of families and family life to people and their communities.

Activities to discover during that day…

On Family Day, many people plan and take part in activities aimed at the whole family. These include visiting art exhibitions, watching movies, skating on outdoor ice rinks, playing board games and taking part in craft activities.

As the weather is usually very cold in February, hot chocolate and freshly baked cookies are popular snacks. Other people use the long weekend as an opportunity for a short winter break or to travel to visit family members or friends.

Public Life

In the provinces of Alberta, Ontario, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia many people have a day off work and schools are generally closed on Family Day. Many businesses and organizations are closed, but post offices may be open. Public transport services may run to their usual or reduced timetables.

In the province of Manitoba, the third Monday of February is a general holiday, known as Louis Riel Day. Many people have a day off work and school and many businesses, organizations and stores are closed. In some communities, stores are open after noon. Public transport services may run to Sunday or holiday timetables. In rural areas, there may be no services.

Background history of the « family day »

Family Day was first held in Canada in the province of Alberta in 1990. It is supposed to reflect the values of family and home that were important to the pioneers who founded Alberta, and give workers the opportunity to spend more time with their families. Family Day was introduced in Saskatchewan in 2007 and in Ontario in 2008. British Columbia observes Family Day as a statutory holiday for the first time in 2013. One of the reasons for introducing Family Day was that there was a long period when there were no holidays from New Year’s Day until Good Friday.

19Vernissage for Felting Artist Zoe Emily Lianga

Zoe Emily Lianga’s work will be on display for the month of February at the MERA Schoolhouse in McDonalds Corners.

This showcase highlights the merging of her separate paths as a designer, felt maker, and fibre artist. Her work will include wall hangings and quilts, clothing, accessories, bags, and home decor. Zoe’s tailored clothes are built off classic lines, sewn from original patterns and made with 100% recycled fabrics.

22Her wearable, felted clothing and accessories, made from luxurious fibres (such as camel, yak, merino, and silk), impart a softness that is without parallel. Each design is developed in its own characteristic way, involving a process of much precision, tactility and organic spontaneity. Design, focusing on Pattern Making and Haute Couture Sewing, has helped her to design, draft and make her intricately tailored visions.

Zoe’s tailored clothes are built off classic lines, sewn from original patterns and made with 100% recycled fabrics. Her background in study at the Richard Robinson Academy of Fashion Design, focusing on Pattern Making and Haute Couture Sewing, has helped her to design, draft and make her intricately tailored visions. Her creativity takes on a different form in her art pieces and wall hangings, both demonstrating her level of workmanship, plus the overall diversity of fibre arts and felt making.

The Governor General’s foot guards Band

21The Governor General’s foot guards Band will be performing at St. Paul’s United Church in Perth (25 Gore St. West). The 30-piece concert band is part of the most senior reserve infantry regiment in Canada, dating back to its formation in 1872. The band is based at Cartier Square Drill Hall in downtown Ottawa. They share a close connection to the Governor General and provide music for many ceremonies in the Ottawa area, including the annual nationally televised Remembrance Day Ceremony held at the War Memorial. Their Director, Lt. Col. Frances Chilton-Mackay, is the Staff Officer of Army Bands for all bands in the Canadian Army. She became the first female director of the ensemble in 2006.

33The band’s full dress uniform with scarlet tunic and bearskin hat is immediately recognizable. Many of the musicians in the ensemble play in the Ceremonial Guard band, which supports the changing of the guard ceremony on Parliament Hill during the summer months. The performance will include a variety of traditional, military and popular music for concert band including the Finale from Saints-Saens Symphony #2 arranged for band and organ involving St. Paul’s Director of Music, Brad Mills. A special segment of the concert program will feature music from the Star Wars movies, celebrating the December release of the seventh movie in the series, Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Admission to the concert is FREE, but donations will be accepted at the door to defray the costs of advertising. Prospective concert-goers are invited to warm up an early February Saturday evening with the exciting sounds of brass, woodwind, percussion and organ in the intimate and accoustically pleasant sanctuary of St. Paul’s United Church.

ONTARIO FAMILY FISHING WEEK

headerbgOntario Family Fishing Week

When: July 4, 2015 to July 12, 2015

During this week you can fish licence free on any lake or river in Ontario.
Info: 705-748-6324 or http://www.ontariofamilyfishing.com/

Ontario Family Fishing Events is a province-wide opportunity for Canadian residents to fish Ontario waters without the otherwise mandatory fishing version outdoors card. The Ontario Government designates two periods throughout the year as license-free, February 14-16, 2015 (12:01 a.m. Saturday to 11:59 p.m. Monday) and July 4-12, 2015 (12:01 a.m. Saturday to 11:59 p.m. Sunday). During all other time periods, Canadian residents between the ages of 18 and 64 years must purchase a valid fishing license to legally fish in Ontario.

There has never been a better time to introduce a friend to fishing!

Participants fishing without a license must fish under the Conservation fishing license limits which are set out in the current Ontario Recreational Fishing Regulations Summary. With the exception of the licensing requirement, Ontario fishing regulations, fees and limits continue to apply during license-free days. Printed copies of the summary are available at licence issuers and ServiceOntario Centres.

Events such as festivals, clinics, derbies and workshops are hosted across the province. To find an event near you, visit the Events List & Map. Each event provides a great opportunity to get outside, spend some wholesome time with the family, and develop a strong connection with conservation through the enjoyment of fishing.

As anglers, we shape the future of fishing in Ontario! Always fish with care and concern for our precious natural resources.

“Full-contact, hard-core” Flamenco guitarist performs at MERA

The final concert in MERA’s Sunday Schoolhouse Spring Concert Series, on Sunday, June 28, will feature award-winning Spanish/Canadian flamenco guitarist and composer Jorge Miguel, in an ensemble that includes a flamenco singer and dancer.

Miguel’s new CD “Guitarra Flamenca/Flamenco Guitar” is an exploration of the depth and breadth of Flamenco Guitar by an artist that has dedicated his life to this art form. Eight diverse songs styles, known in Flamenco circles as “palos”, are performed with precision, passion and originality yet remain firmly rooted in tradition.

Miguel’s family is from Cadiz, Andalucia, Spain, his parents moved from Seville to Toronto just one year before he was born. After years of trying to ignore his Spanish roots, Miguel realized his true calling was playing Flamenco. Miguel moved back to Spain in 1995 to immerse himself in the study of Flamenco Guitar, and he has not strayed from that path since.

Miguel has studied with maestro’s Manolo Sanlucar, Cañizares, José Antonio Rodriguez in Cordoba, Gerardo Nuñez in Sanlucar, Pepe Russo in Cadiz, Don Antonio Villar in El Puerto de Santa Maria, Carlos Del Rio in Madrid,  Augustin “Bola” Carbonell in Seville and attended workshops w/ Diego Del Morao and singer Rocio Marquez in Toronto. Miguel has also accompanied renowned dancers such as Esmeralda Enrique, Soledad Barrio, Isabel Bayon  and Maria Serrano.

In 2002 the Jorge Miguel Flamenco Ensemble was formed with the mandate to take true Flamenco to audiences across Canada and beyond. The Ensemble combines the three pillars of Flamenco, the guitar, the dance and the song (el Toque, el Baile y el Canté). Miguel has performed over 1000 shows from Whitehorse, The Yukon to Antigonish, Nova Scotia as well as in the U.S. and Europe.

Miguel’s Ensemble was nominated in 2011 for Capacoa Touring Artist of the Year and Miguel was awarded the 2013 Canadian Folk Music Award for  World Solo Artist and Instrumental Artist of the Year.

“He performs with a gusto he calls ‘full contact, hard-core’ flamenco. …the tempo-shifting Alegrias en La and the spirited Rumba Tangos are take-no-prisoner affairs, full of rousing vocals, percussive handclaps or “palmas” and Miguel’s fleet-fingered guitar playing. Even quieter numbers like the meditative Trocitus (Solea) and the gentle Silencio por Alegrias are brimming with emotion.” – Nicholas Jennings, Penguin Eggs Magazine

“When the musician is Jorge Miguel…you’re talking serious flamenco. He went right to the source—Seville in Spain – to learn the intricacies of the music.” – Fresh Air, CBC Radio
