28th Annual Women’s Fair

21

Mark your calendar for November 5th, 2016 from 10 am to 4 pm at the Neelin Street Community Center (CP arena) for the Annual LCIH Women’s Fair in support of Lanark County Interval House.

Interval House is the only dedicated anti-violence organization in the County. From support services, crisis line, emergency shelter to outreach services and public education, Lanark County Interval House is reaching out, rising up and supporting women’s empowerment, strength and courage.

Women’s Fair demonstrates true leadership

The herstory of the Women’s Fair is one that LCIH is most proud of, as the legacy of leadership and commitment is remarkable. It combines two essential goals of the work of LCIH; it raises much-needed funds to support our many programs and it offers a venue for public education on the issues facing women and their children fleeing and or living with violence in their homes.

Without the Women’s Fair the agency would be required to raise many more thousands of dollars to offer the direct service supports to women in Lanark County.

We appreciate the support of the community as it is an integral part of the foundation so we hope to see you at the fair.

Take back the Night

24

Take Back The Night will take place on September 21st, 2016.

For the past several years Carleton Place has been host to one of the most well-attended rural Take Back the Night Marches in Canada. Even on the soggiest of nights local residents turn out with their banners and noise-makers in record numbers. All to demand that a womanʼs right to walk our streets safely be upheld.

The Take Back The Night, march, an event that focuses on ending violence against women. Take Back the Night events take place across North America. They are designed to raise the awareness of safety issues for women and children. This march protests harassment, sexual abuse, and assault.

Why is the Take Back the Night March Necessary?

Women are much more likely to feel worried or unsafe about their personal security. The overall message of the Take Back the Night observances and protests around the world is, Women are still not safe from male violence.

  • Because moreso than men, many women feel we need to modify our activities or routines or avoid certain places to protect ourselves from crime
  • Because we more often feel we need to lock our doors when alone
  • Because we more carefully plan routes with safety in mind
  • Because we check the back seat of our parked cars before we get in
  • Because incidents of rape and assault are not decreasing. They are in fact increasing
  • Because women are often told to be extra careful and take precautions when going out at night.
  • Because in some parts of the world, even today, women are not allowed out at night.

This is a family friendly event for all to join!! We hope to see you there!!

Light up the Labyrinth

23

Light up the Labyrinth Walk will be taking place on September 19th, the warm glow of more than 600 candlelit luminaries will flicker along the path of Carleton Place’s Community Labyrinth.

The Labyrinth Committee of Carleton Place invites you to bring out your lanterns, glow sticks or flashlights and join our FREE evening walk. Find us behind the Carleton Place and Beckwith Heritage Museum, 267 Edmund St.

The Community Labyrinth is located at the corner of George and Baines Streets, beside the Carleton Place & Beckwith Heritage Museum. The stone-bordered grassy path is the focal point for Labyrinth Park, a peaceful garden filled with ornamental grasses, native trees, benches for sitting, and a wheelchair-accessible contemplation ring that encircles the labyrinth. The labyrinth was built starting in 2010, and construction was made possible by the Town of Carleton Place, individual, business  & community sponsors, and a Trillium Foundation grant.

We have a series of events planned throughout 2016 – and hope that you will be able to join in.

And if you prefer to experience discovering and walking the labyrinth on your own – feel free to come and do a meditative walk any time. There is an informational sign that will guide you on your way!

Carleton Place Dragon Ball Festival

21

Not to be missed! On September 10, 2016, the town of Carleton Place will once again find Riverside Park teaming with excitement.

The mission of the Festival Committee is to host the best (fun & well-run) small, one-day dragon-boat event in Eastern Ontario.  We are a non-profit organization that returns 100% of the proceeds back to the community.

This festival provides a close-up view of the dragon boats. The entire race is in full view from the banks of the Mississippi. All proceeds from this fun, well-run dragon-boat event are returned to the community. Preparing for another successful year, we plan on another full festival with 46+ teams – over 1100 paddlers and drummers coursing across the finish line with a large number of spectators cheering them on. Visitors from all over Eastern Ontario are drawn to this event.

Since it began in 2002, more than $40,500 has been donated to local organizations! In addition to the exciting races you’ll also find entertainment in Riverside Park, activities for kids, food and merchandise. Check for information about races, rules and fees.

For 2015, The Fall 400 donated $15,000 to the Arena Building Fund of the Town of Carleton Place for change room renovations for the Carleton Place Arena.

The Race Format has changed for 2015 onwards.  A few highlights:

  • Two 400m races and one 200m race
  • Two final races (“A” Final and “B” Final)

Come, be a part of the The Fall 400™ Dragon Boat Festival – Carleton Place’s newest tradition and one of the world’s oldest.
