Taiwanese Students Visit Thunder Bay Aviation School

For Ivan Lin, being a pilot was always a dream of his ever since he was a young child. According to Lin, aviation excites him—just setting his eyes on an aircraft apparently causes him to “feel” the aircraft, as if he were in the cockpit controlling it.

The chance to be one of the 12 students from Taiwan’s National Formosa University who visited Confederation College’s School of Aviation here in the City of Thunder Bay came as a golden opportunity for Lin to brush up on his aviation skills, and enjoy a bit of vacation time at the side. After all, Thunder Bay can a be a beautiful city, especially during the summer.

Lin gushed when he shared his experience here, saying that it was the best time he’s had since he’s been in the aeronautical engineering department. He said that while National Formosa University’s aviation department is world class, their curriculum revolves more around theory, and less on hands-on projects.

The Thunder Bay college on the other hand, allowed Lin and his fellow students to pick up a new set of valuable skills, including knowledge on new aircraft operating methods.

In addition, Lin and his fellow students also got to improve their English skills as they attended ESL classes throughout their stay.

Thunder Bay Gets Ready for Canada Day

Although Canada Day here in the City of Thunder Bay will have a slightly different feel this year, organizers putting together numerous events here in the city promise it will still be packed with fun and action – lot’s of it in fact.

The year’s festivities in celebration of the country’s birth will not come with the traditional Water Street parade, and while that may be disappointing, there are plenty of other activities sure to keep the adults and kids interested and busy.

One the main stage at Marina Park for example, bands and musicians will be showcasing their music and skills to the public beginning at 5:30 in the afternoon to 11 in the evening. Some of the musicians set to take the stage include the Retro-Fits, Garrick Sissons, and Mood Indigo.

And as always, one of the attractions folks are expected to attend is the fireworks display, which in the past has drawn in an audience of over 20,000 people.

Water Street meanwhile, will play host to more bands and musicians, with the likes of Tracy K and Billy Manzik entertaining those in attendance.

With the 1st of July only a few days away, residents in Thunder Bay are buzzing with excitement at the chance to relax and have lots of fun.

Artist Works on Bringing Back Traditional Art into the Spotlight in Thunder Bay

With blockbuster films enjoying the most attention these days, one local painter hopes that her efforts will encourage people to be aware of other forms of art.

3 years ago, Linda Dell moved to her studio in Court Street so she could paint in peace. Her store is now adorned with paintings ranging from classics, to expressions depicting nature. Just this Saturday, Dell was part of the HandMade in Thunder Bay summer sampler tour, a program created to raise cultural awareness and encourage other artists and artisans to share their art and talents with the public, whether it be through galleries or demonstrations.

Dell adds that increasing cultural awareness in the City of Thunder Bay isn’t as hard as some people think – it just requires work from everyone in the community. When people are exposed to art, the better they can appreciate the works of others, both old and new.

It’s something Dell wants to work on, especially since these days, most people are limiting their scope to popular films, and don’t give much thought for the beauty of traditional art. She points out that in the old days, paintings and sculptures used to be at the center of culture and art, something that’s diminished due to the rise of films.

Thunder Bay Celebrates National Aboriginal Day

For Rebecca Taylor, the Aboriginal way of life was something she grew up with during her childhood. Having moved to the city since then, she’s worried that her daughter might miss out on an important facet of her heritage and culture.

The opportunity to immerse her young daughter in the culture presented itself through National Aboriginal Day, an occasion that drew in hundreds of participants for an afternoon of music, dance, and of course, good food. In fact, Taylor and her child were right smack in the middle of the festivities held at Chippewa Park.

Taylor says that since Thunder Bay is a relatively urbanized area, seeing activities on aboriginal culture is rare, making it important to see such activities whenever the opportunity presents itself. She adds that since she and her daughter’s father grew up in the culture, it only felt right to pass on their knowledge to their child.

For those of the First Nations, the summer solstice has long been a time for the people to gather, to celebrate knowledge, and to share their culture with others. Here in Thunder Bay, National Aboriginal Day began with a grand kickoff, with a celebration of music and traditional costumed dance that showcased the culture of the First Nations people.

Thunder Bay Hospital Receives new MRI Device

This August managing, detecting, and more importantly treating breast cancer is set to get easier, thanks to a $185,000 MRI enhancement device set to be installed at the Regional Health Sciences Centre.

Called the Sentinelle Vanguard Breast MRI Coil, the device is already being used at some of the world’s most advanced medical treatment facilities, and its addition to Thunder Bay will definitely improve the quality of treatment for patients in Northwestern Ontario, this according to health officials and doctors from the hospital Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute.

Neety Panu, a radiologist in Thunder Bay, says that the addition of the new equipment, which was acquired thanks to a grant from the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital Foundation, will bolster the launching of the Regional Health Sciences Centre’s Linda Buchan Centre and turn it into a state-of-the-art breast-imaging centre.

For breast cancer patients, doctors will now be able to have a better look at the extent of the disease in a more detailed and comprehensive way. From Day 1, physicians can now chart the best possible path in treating the disease.

Panu says that the earlier breast cancer is treated, the higher the chances a patient has in fighting off the disease, and early detection is precisely what the device will help in accomplishing.

ZZ Top Rocks Thunder Bay

For folks in Thunder Bay, Wednesday night was spent rocking out and reminiscing the 80s.

Texas trio ZZ Top was in town, electrifying the standing-only audience of the Thunder Bay Community Auditorium with a 90-minute blues set, taking the audience back into the heyday of a career that spans 45 years. From Billy Gibbons’ early days with rock legend Jimi Hendrix, to their conquering of MTV’s early age, it was evident that most of those in attendance were men and women who were with them every step of that journey.

And though they were a little grayer on Wednesday, these guys still knew how to rock out, and rock out good they did. Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill, and Frank Beard didn’t show their age from the start to the end of the concert, driving the crowd wild right off the bat with their hit record “Got Me Under Pressure,” from the 1983 album, “Eliminator.”

After 90 minutes of hard rocking, the audience got to hear the band’s 1975 record “Tush.” By then, the crowd was in full frenzy, reliving their teenage years, and for some, the younger years of their parents.

Indeed, it was a night of good music and good memories, and those in Thunder Bay couldn’t wait to have another serving of ZZ Top.
