Carolyn Fe, Acoustic @ the Royal Theatre

Carolyn Fe Blues Collective, Acoustic Trio steps up onstage at the newly renovated historic The Royal Theatre, Thousand Islands (formerly known as the Delaney Theatre) in Gananoque, Ontraio. We’ll be offering you an acoustic trio.

Some history about the theatre: Built in 1930 by the Delaney family as a Vaudeville House, this all poured-concrete structure was one of the first “fire-proof” buildings ever conceived in North America. The Great Depression slowed the family’s progress with their new theatre venture, however, and it was not until 1937 that the doors were opened to patrons. The venue hosted live acts and popular movies until 1960, when it was converted to a bowling alley. Proprietor and Founding Artistic Director Kevin John Saylor and Creative Partner Frayne McCarthy purchased the imposing old building in 2013 and proceeded to restore it to its original beauty. The spirit of community in Gananoque was immediately inviting, and the fact that the town was already a theatre destination (home of the Thousand Islands Playhouse) and very famous as the “Gateway to the Thousand Islands”, made the revival an easy decision.

Happy Mother’s Day  2017!

Mother’s Day is a celebration honoring the mother of the family, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most commonly in the months of March or May.

Background
Early Mother’s Day celebrations can be dated back to the spring celebrations to honor Rhea, the Mother of the Gods, in ancient Greek civilization, according to some sources. Later, Mothering Sunday in the United Kingdom was traditionally a day for people to visit the church where they were baptized, although it now also celebrates motherhood in modern times.

Symbol
Early celebrations of Mother’s Day originated from Canada’s neighboring country, the United States. Carnations are a popular Mother’s Day symbol in both Canada and the United States. Some people may choose to wear a carnation as a brooch on Mother’s Day. However, other flowers are also given to mothers or mother figures to symbolize one’s love and appreciation for them.

What do people do on Mother’s day?
Many people remember their mothers and mother figures on Mother’s Day.
Some people give cards, flowers, or chocolates, and/or make handmade items or special meals on Mother’s Day. Others take their mothers or mother figures to the movies, a restaurant, café, or a day in a park. Some mothers and mother figures also receive special gifts such as jewelry, clothing, accessories, and gift vouchers for services or products.

Mother’s Day falls on different days depending on the countries where it is celebrated. It is held on the second Sunday of May in many countries, such as Australia, Canada and the United States. It is held exactly three weeks before Easter Sunday in the United Kingdom. Sundays are usually non-school and non-working days in these countries.

St Patrick’s Day

5

St Patrick’s Day is a public holiday in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador on the nearest Monday to March 17 each year. It remembers St Patrick, a missionary who converted many of Ireland’s inhabitants to Christianity in the 5th century. His feast day also celebrates Irish culture.

St Patrick’s Day marks the feast day and anniversary of the death of a Christian missionary known as Patrick. He was born in the year 387, probably somewhere near the present day border between Scotland and England. At the age of 16, he was captured and taken to Ireland as a slave. During this period, he became very religious and after six years he fled back to his family.

St Patrick’s Day celebrations were brought to Canada by Irish immigrants. The day is a bank holiday in Northern Ireland and a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland. In the rest of the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia and New Zealand, it is celebrated, but is not an official holiday.
People who have an Irish background or enjoy Irish culture may hold Irish themed parties and serve traditional dishes, such as Colcannon or Irish stew. Colcannon is a dish of mashed potatoes mixed with kale or cabbage and Irish stew is traditionally made with lamb and root vegetables.

Symbol

The most widely-seen St Patrick’s Day symbols are the colors green, and sometimes orange, and the shamrock. The shamrock is a symbol of Ireland and a registered trademark of the Republic of Ireland. It is the leaf of the clover plant, which grows on the ground, often among grass and an Irish Catholic symbol of the Holy Trinity. It is sometimes confused with the four-leaf clover, which is a variety of the three-leaf clover and is thought to bring good luck.

Valentine’s Day Celebration

6

Valentine’s Day is a time when people show feelings of love, affection and friendship. It is celebrated in many ways worldwide and falls on February 14, each year.

Valentine’s Day is an opportunity for people to tell somebody that they love them in a romantic way. It falls on February 14, the name day of two saints, St Valentine of Rome and St Valentine of Terni. In pre-Christian times, the middle of February was a time of pagan fertility festivals in Europe and allegedly the time when birds chose a mate.

Many people give gifts to loved ones on Valentine’s Day. Common gifts are:
•    Flowers, particularly red roses.
•    Chocolates and/or candy.
•    Teddy bears.
•    Toy hearts.
•    Sparkling wine.
•    Cosmetics.
•    Clothing, including lingerie.
•    Jewelry.

Many people also thought that birds chose their mates at this time of year. Around the year 1380, the English poet Chaucer wrote a poem for the first anniversary of the engagement of King Richard II to Anne of Bohemia. This is thought to be the first association between celebrations of romantic love and St Valentine’s Day on February 14. The connection remained important throughout the middle ages.

The most common symbols of Valentine’s Day are heart shapes, which are used to decorate many things, including cards, trees, wrapping paper, cookies and gift boxes. Other symbols associated with February 14 are pairs of birds, cute teddy bears, Cupid and his arrows and couples kissing or embracing. The colors red and pink are often associated with Valentine’s Day.

Christmas Day

9

Many Christians in Canada mark the birth of Jesus Christ on December 25, which is known as Christmas Day. It is a day of celebration when many Canadians exchange gifts and enjoy festive meals.

Many Canadians have a day off work on December 25 and many spend the day with close relatives or friends. It is customary to exchange gifts, enjoy a special festive meal and, perhaps, attend a special church service.

The traditions centered on Christmas gifts in Canada vary a lot between families. In some families, a mythical figure called Santa Claus brings gifts. He travels on a sleigh pulled by reindeer, enters homes via the chimney and leaves presents and candy in Christmas stockings or in a pile under the Christmas tree.

Symbols of Christmas Day

There are many symbols of Christmas. These include images of baby Jesus and the Holy family in the stable, stars and Christmas trees. Another important symbol of Christmas is Santa Claus. This is a mythical figure with origins in European, particularly British, Dutch and German, cultures. He is a jolly man who wears a red suit, has a long white beard, lives at the North Pole and travels in a sleigh pulled by reindeer.

Fall Foliage and Lunch Cruise

29

It’s time for a scenic fall colour boat cruise in Ontario.

If you’re like us, you never tire of that annual rite known as the fall colours. It’s when forests and meadows and treed boulevards turn from green to a riot of reds, yellows and oranges. It’s the colour of happiness, though tinged with a bit of sadness because after all, this display of natural beauty leaves little doubt that summer, alas, is truly over.

If you’re like us and love water, you’ll want to fit a cruise into your 2012 leaf-peeping tours. The combination of fresh air, vivid colours and shimmering waters is truly good for the soul. To help you set your compass, we’ve compiled a list of some of our favourite fall colour boat cruises in Ontario. The most popular cruises are booking up fast, so don’t wait to make that reservation!

Dinner includes: Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, hot seasonal vegetables, cranberry sauce, mixed green salad, pumpkin praline pie and coffee or tea.
