PERTH AUTUMN STUDIO TOUR 10-12th October

PERTH AUTUMN STUDIO TOUR 10-12th October

PERTH AUTUMN STUDIO TOUR 10-12th October

Thanksgiving Weekend
Saturday, Sunday and Monday
October 10,11,12
10 am to 5 pm.

*Admission is free*

Located within 25 kilometres of picturesque Perth, the Tour showcases one of Eastern Ontario’s finest selections of contemporary fine arts and crafts against a backdrop of Mother Nature at her best.

The real heart of the Perth Autumn Studio Tour is of course, the creative process that allows us to produce the work we love. Some studios are able to give demonstrations but many are given over to the studio tour and guest artists so this is not possible. To help you see us at work we have started a PHOTO GALLERY of the actual work process. As well, our studio links provide some preview images of the wide variety of wonderful works you will see when you join us on our tour.

Now celebrating it’s 23nd year, the Tour has added many new artisans for a total of 25 participants. Most are from the Perth area while others have been juried and invited to attend from other parts of Eastern Ontario. To minimize your driving time we’re presenting our works in 6 different rural studios clustered near Perth in very accessible and beautiful locations. There are demonstrations at many of the studio stops, and several feature outstanding garden walks.

Help us celebrate over 20 years being one of Ontario’s most prestigious studio tours!

Jewellery, etchings, canoes, pottery, furniture, stone sculpture, and wood carvings are only a few of the media you will see on the tour. Start at any location number, the routes are well marked. Besides the map provided, there are several important pieces of information on the details page.

The Perth Autumn Studio Tour is a very special showcase for contemporary fine crafts. In 1999 this extraordinary group of artisans was awarded a grant by the Ontario Arts Council in recognition of the high standard of work presented over the previous ten years. It was the only studio tour in Ontario to receive such an award.

Happy Labour Day!

labour day CanadaIn 2015 Labour Day is Monday September 7

Celebrate this year’s first Monday of September with your friends and family!

This holiday officially celebrates workers and the labour union movement, however, most of us only think of it as the last long weekend of the summer, a perfect occasion for one last BBQ or canoe trip. Many seasonal attractions and vendors close after the labour day long weekend and it is generally the start of the fall shoulder season for tourist attractions.

Traditionally, Labour Day was an occasion to campaign for and celebrate workers’ rights during parades and picnics organized by trade unions. These still play a role in Labour Day for some Canadians, but many people see the first Monday in September as an opportunity to take a late summer trip, perhaps to their country cottage, or enjoy the company of family or friends at picnics, fairs, festivals and fireworks displays.

For teenagers and other students, the Labour Day weekend is the last chance to celebrate with a party or to go on a trip before school re-opens for the new academic year. Canadian football fans may spend a large proportion of the weekend watching the Labour Day Classic matches live or on television.

The Labour Day Classic consists of three games between high ranking teams in the Canadian Football League. One match is played on the Sunday before Labour Day and two on Labour Day.

Organizing Committee

The Terry Fox Foundation is responsible for supporting close to $20 million in discovery based research each year in Canada – all monies raised outside Canada must be distributed to (a) an institute approved by the Foundation and its advisors or (b) remitted to Canada. The Terry Fox Research Institute (TFRI) is a recipient of TFF funding for translational research. TFRI is an exciting new initiative whose goal is to translate rapidly today’s best science into better cancer treatment and diagnosis for all Canadians. The Institute will bring scientists and clinicians together across the country into a functionally integrated, geographically dispersed Institute with nodes in several provinces.

The Foundation recognizes the duality of its mandate. Not only does it raise money for research, but it also continues to share the story of Terry Fox. The Terry Fox Foundation strives to maintain the heroic effort and integrity that Terry embodied.

It is a grassroots organization that does not allow the Terry Fox name or likeness to be commercialized or conjoined with other worthy causes.

To date, over $650 million has been raised worldwide for cancer research in Terry’s name.

108TH ANNUAL GLEN TAY BLOCK RACE AUG. 27, 2015

108th Annual Glen Tay Block RaceAugust 27, 2015 6:00 pm

108th Annual Glen Tay Block Race

Starting in Downtown Perth, this is a traditional favourite and many athletes return each year to participate in the 14.7-kilometre road race. It starts and finishes at the Perth Museum on Gore Street and begins at 6 p.m.

Info: http://www.glentayblock.com

The 14.7k or 9.1 mile Glen Tay Block Race was first run on Thursday, October 31, 1907 with Ed Code as the winner. The race was contested as a Thanksgiving day event for several years. For the pre-race article in The Perth Courier CLICK HERE. For the post-race article CLICK HERE.
The modern edition was founded in 1967 by Perth educator and coach Tom Graham as a Centennial year project. It was sponsored by Perth merchants Bill and Jack Wilson, and encouraged by sportsmen Rusty White and Peter Code. The successful event continues with Branch 244, Royal Canadian Legion as the sponsor. The Perth Runners organize and conduct the race with the assistance of numerous helpers, particularly along the race course. Many of the volunteers, especially families, have been involved for several years.

The race begins and ends on Gore St., directly in front of the Perth Museum. Replicas of the Bill Wilson Memorial Trophy (men), and the Perth Runners Trophy (women) are awarded to the race winners. Medals and prizes are awarded in several age class categories. A Branch 244 Legion commemorative pennant, and a race certificate are presented to each participant. The course records are: Overall record of 45:14 set in 2003 by Kingston’s Steve Boyd; and women’s record of 54:36 set in 1982 by Helen Cooper of Ottawa. The previous course record of 45:30 was held by Perth native Doug Scorrar from 1976 to 2003.
